The weather is expected to be favorable for those interested in viewing the lunar eclipse this weekend in Southwest Colorado, with the National Weather Service calling for relatively clear skies Sunday night.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not just any lunar eclipse. It\u2019s a \u201csuper blood wolf moon\u201d lunar eclipse.<\/p>\n

The moon will start to be eclipsed about 8:30 p.m. and will be fully eclipsed at 10:12 p.m.<\/p>\n

Depending on weather, people in North and South America will be able to watch it.<\/p>\n

Chris Cuoco, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, said people in Southwest Colorado will likely have a clear view.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019re going to be lucky on that,\u201d he said. \u201cIt does look like we\u2019re going to have a pretty good night as far as cloudless skies. There should be a decent view of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

At worst, Cuoco said it could be partly cloudy, with high, thin clouds.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you should still be able to see the moon throughout it all,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

So what exactly is a super blood wolf moon total lunar eclipse?<\/p>\n

According to NASA<\/a>, the \u201csuper\u201d part of the name is a result of the eclipse falling on the first supermoon of the year, when the moon is full and at its closest point in its orbit around the Earth, appearing larger than normal.<\/p>\n

The term \u201cblood\u201d is not a scientific term but is attached because the color of the moon will turn a hue of red as a result of the Earth lining up between the moon and the sun.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen this happens, the only light that reaches the moon\u2019s surface is from the edges of the Earth\u2019s atmosphere,\u201d according to NASA. \u201cThe air molecules from Earth\u2019s atmosphere scatter out most of the blue light. The remaining light reflects onto the moon\u2019s surface with a red glow, making the moon appear red in the night sky.\u201d<\/p>\n

A \u201cwolf moon\u201d is the name given to January\u2019s full moon, according to the \u201cOld Farmer\u2019s Almanac<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

And a total lunar eclipse is where a full moon passes through Earth\u2019s shadow.<\/p>\n

Cuoco said it would be good to get away from city lights to view the event, but it\u2019s not essential.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven through the city lights, you can see a lunar eclipse fairly well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Lows Sunday night are expected to be in the mid- to high 20s.<\/p>\n
