{"id":95816,"date":"2019-01-31T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/annual-count-finds-fewer-birds-but-reasons-why-still-up-in-the-air\/"},"modified":"2019-01-31T05:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T12:00:00","slug":"annual-count-finds-fewer-birds-but-reasons-why-still-up-in-the-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/annual-count-finds-fewer-birds-but-reasons-why-still-up-in-the-air\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual count finds fewer birds, but reasons why still up in the air"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:0e967bc6-0eb1-42a5-a97e-4b464ff5cf28 --><\/p>\n<p>Fewer birds were spotted during this winter\u2019s annual bird count, a possible side effect of drought and the 416 Fire, but researchers say it\u2019s too soon to draw conclusions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of birds were definitely down,\u201d said John Bregar, a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/durangobirdclub.wixsite.com\/mysite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Durango Bird Club<\/a>. \u201cThere was some discussion as to why, but it\u2019s all speculation. We really don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since 1949, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audubon.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Audubon Society<\/a> has hosted an annual Christmas Bird Count in Durango, in which volunteers are asked to record every species of bird spotted in a 7.5-mile radius around Pastorius Reservoir within a 24-hour period.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><div class=\"naviga-social-embed\">&lt;![CDATA[\n<div class=\"pdf-asset-embed\">\n  Bird count area<br>\n  <iframe src=\"\/\/dur-cjweb.newscyclecloud.com\/assets\/pdf\/CJ33711221.pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:600px\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pdf-download-notice\">If you\u2019re unable to view the PDF document above, <a href=\"https:\/\/dur-cjweb.newscyclecloud.com\/assets\/pdf\/CJ33711221.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a> to view it in a new tab<\/div>\n<p>\n]]&gt;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A number of factors can affect the amount of birds and the number of species spotted during the count, including weather, migration habits and even how many volunteers participate to help spot the feathered creatures.<\/p>\n<p>For reference, <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.wixstatic.com\/ugd\/fabe9d_30929ade1f4a4ddd9e67b4cb733a1841.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 was seen as a good year for the bird count<\/a>, with volunteers finding 85 species and 7,452 individual birds.<\/p>\n<p>This winter, the count, <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.wixstatic.com\/ugd\/fabe9d_b94817e7debf414e90c8129427e3c2cc.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which was conducted Dec. 16<\/a>, found a strong number of diverse species \u2013 82 \u2013 but the number of individual birds was down to about 6,732.<\/p>\n<p>For comparison, there were 38 volunteers in 2017 and 35 volunteers this past December.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the benefit of the bird counts, which occur countrywide, is that once all the counts across the U.S. are finished, researchers can look at the data and look for trends on how birds are behaving and migrating, Bregar said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=215ba68f-7f22-4337-9620-e136535c840a&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=215ba68f-7f22-4337-9620-e136535c840a&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=800 800w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=215ba68f-7f22-4337-9620-e136535c840a&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1200 1200w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=215ba68f-7f22-4337-9620-e136535c840a&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1800 1800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 2000px\" alt=\"Pastorius Reservoir is the central point for the annual Christmas Bird Count. Ortega<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cChristmas Bird Counts tend to be pretty variable in terms of numbers of birds and species counts,\u201d the CPW staffer wrote. \u201cDrought could be an issue; but long-term data would be needed to develop any plausible explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bregar speculated the drought caused grasses and small plants to not produce as many seeds, so there wasn\u2019t as much available food for birds in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Also, one main topic of conversation after analyzing the local count was if the 416 Fire, which ripped through an estimated 54,000 acres of the San Juan National Forest north of Durango this past summer, had any impact on bird populations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audubon.org\/news\/how-wildfires-affect-birds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the Audubon Society<\/a>, when wildfire breaks out, birds flee and find other places to nest. Ortega<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Bird-watchers were able to spot some new species this year not seen previously in the nearly 70 years the event has been held.<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet_rr\">The acorn woodpecker. Bregar said there\u2019s only one known colony of the acorn woodpecker in Colorado, and that\u2019s up by the Rafter J subdivision southwest of Durango, but outside the count\u2019s radius area.
