Scott Tipton votes against House resolution to overturn Trump\u2019s emergency declaration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2013 U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton voted against a House resolution Tuesday to overturn President Donald Trump\u2019s declaration of a national emergency on the southern border.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic-led resolution, which must now pass the Senate, would nullify Trump\u2019s national emergency, less than two weeks after he declared it Feb. 15. This marks the first time Congress has attempted to overturn a presidential emergency since the 1976 National Emergencies Act passed.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\" data-naviga-align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=99350409-0122-449e-b061-e960f1d15058&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=99350409-0122-449e-b061-e960f1d15058&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=800 800w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=99350409-0122-449e-b061-e960f1d15058&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1200 1200w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=99350409-0122-449e-b061-e960f1d15058&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1800 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 2000px\" width=\"242\" height=\"338\" alt=\"Tipton\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Tipton<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cWhile I strongly prefer that this be addressed through the legislative process, unfortunately, Democrat leaders in Congress refuse to put forth serious proposals to secure the U.S.\/Mexico border, which led to action by the president through the powers granted to him under the National Emergencies Act,\u201d Tipton, R-Cortez, said in a prepared statement after the vote.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution passed with 232 Democrats voting in favor of blocking the national emergency declaration. (Three Democrats did not cast a vote.)<\/p>\n<p>Tipton has long supported strong border control. In a conversation Monday with <em>The Durango Herald<\/em>, he emphasized the \u201cimportance of maintaining our border and our security in terms of border threats that are coming over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWe\u2019re hopeful we\u2019ll be able to see legislation actually move through the process. I think that\u2019s important, but we also have empathy for the president\u2019s position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tipton called out House Democrats for what he saw as their unwillingness to work with the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not seeing a partner that is willing to work with them, particularly out of the House right now under Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi,\u201d Tipton said.<\/p>\n<p>In his statement after Tuesday\u2019s vote, Tipton said, \u201cNow, the constitutionality of the national emergency declaration will be declared by the Judicial Branch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\" data-naviga-align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=29fdf434-9366-4c20-85c5-b7390dbff676&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=29fdf434-9366-4c20-85c5-b7390dbff676&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=800 800w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=29fdf434-9366-4c20-85c5-b7390dbff676&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1200 1200w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=29fdf434-9366-4c20-85c5-b7390dbff676&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1800 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 2000px\" width=\"330\" height=\"514\" alt=\"Bennet\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Bennet<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The resolution passed the Democratic-held House with a wide majority Tuesday, with a vote of 245-182. Thirteen Republicans voted alongside Democratic colleagues to block the emergency declaration. The proposal now heads to the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., previously came out in opposition of Trump\u2019s emergency declaration. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., has been more circumspect in his thoughts about the national emergency.
