controversies.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>In an interview with the<\/p>\n<p>Snowberger has come under fire in recent months for various issues that came up in quick succession, including:<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">His handling of a <a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/246570-father-says-durango-school-district-9r-mishandled-sexual-assault-investigation\">sexual assault complaint<\/a> involving a student at Riverview Elementary School.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">A 46-page \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/254316-group-calls-on-school-board-to-fire-durango-school-superintendent-dan-snowberger\">white paper<\/a>\u201d release by a group of residents, employees and former employees who called on Snowberger to be fired after it said it found numerous alleged inaccuracies in Snowberger\u2019s r\u00e9sum\u00e9s and applications for past jobs, including his position with 9-R.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">Denying an incident took place at Needham Elementary School <a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/251338-durango-school-district-mum-on-why-employee-was-banned-from-needham-elementary-school\">in which 911 was called<\/a> against the school district\u2019s spokeswoman.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">Using his 9-R email account to air his \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/257750-durango-school-board-reprimands-dan-snowberger-for-using-work-email-to-air-personal-agenda\">personal agenda<\/a>.\u201d<\/em>In the two-page spread of this month\u2019s <em>El Diablo<\/em>, Snowberger defended his actions, called for greater civility and lashed out at the <em>Herald<\/em> for its coverage of recent incidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say, just personally and professionally, these past few months have been the most challenging in my life,\u201d Snowberger told the <em>El Diablo<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The article, written by two student journalists, concludes by saying Snowberger wants greater unity and encourages members of the community to have conversations to better understand one another.<\/p>\n<p>Snowberger did not respond to a request for comment for this story.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Snowberger told the <em>El Diablo<\/em> that most allegations made against him in the \u201cwhite paper\u201d are inaccurate and easily refutable. Snowberger is quoted as saying, \u201cFor a group of people to claim I\u2019m dishonest is just sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also told <em>El Diablo<\/em> that the <em class=\"ITC ital\">Herald<\/em> gave him only \u201cfour hours\u201d to respond for a story about the white paper, and it was during a time he was in intensive care with his wife, Olga, who had been in a car crash and suffered severe injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Snowberger has continued to make this statement, but it is inaccurate. The <em>Herald<\/em> first called Snowberger about the white paper on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018, and left a voicemail. The <em>Herald<\/em> again sought comment from Snowberger on Monday, Dec. 10. The article was posted on the <em>Herald<\/em>\u2019s website on Tuesday, Dec. 11 and was published in the print edition Dec. 12.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>El Diablo<\/em> did not reach out to the <em>Herald<\/em> for comment before publishing its article.<\/p>\n<p>Snowberger also defended his handling of an incident at Needham Elementary School involving a 9-R administrator. On Oct. 19, a school employee called 911 to report the district\u2019s spokeswoman was banned from campus and was trespassing.<\/p>\n<p>Snowberger initially denied an incident took place and refused to acknowledge police records and a recorded 911 call about it. He eventually acknowledged the incident and explained that the spokeswoman was at the school as a parent, not as a 9-R employee.<\/p>\n<p>He told <em>El Diablo<\/em>: \u201cDid something happen? Yes. Because it involved a parent, I chose to deny it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\" data-naviga-align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=8c5e3255-9782-42fd-bfb4-bcb25928572f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=8c5e3255-9782-42fd-bfb4-bcb25928572f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=800 800w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=8c5e3255-9782-42fd-bfb4-bcb25928572f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1200 1200w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=8c5e3255-9782-42fd-bfb4-bcb25928572f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1800 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 2000px\" width=\"600\" height=\"726\" alt=\"Stubbs\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Stubbs<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>School board President Nancy Stubbs <a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/257750-durango-school-board-reprimands-dan-snowberger-for-using-work-email-to-air-personal-agenda\">reprimanded Snowberger<\/a> in December for using his 9-R email for \u201cyour personal agenda where it is not appropriate for you to refer to your plans for litigation or your relations with the media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The board directed him to \u201ccease and desist\u201d using his email account when it comes to issues concerning the alleged sexual assault at Riverview Elementary School, the \u201cwhite paper\u201d and media issues.<\/p>\n<p>In the email, Stubbs asked Snowberger to refer messages from reporters about the white paper and other incidents to Andy Burns, 9-R deputy superintendent; Darryl Farrington, 9-R\u2019s attorney; or Stubbs herself.<\/p>\n<p>Stubbs said last week she does not view Snowberger\u2019s conversation with <em>El Diablo<\/em> as violating that request.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <em>El Diablo<\/em> is a school endeavor where students are learning to be journalists and need practice with interviews and writing articles; Mr. Snowberger is free to grant interviews with them,\u201d Stubbs wrote in an email to the <em>Herald<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Julie Popp, 9-R spokeswoman, issued a statement to the <em>Herald<\/em> stating: \u201cThank you for reaching out to us for clarifications around the recent article ran by the <em>El Diablo<\/em>. We have provided responses to the <em>Herald<\/em> in regard to this topic in support of previous articles and have begun the steps necessary to continue our work for our students and our community.
