He also is chairman of the editorial board for the <em>Herald<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/the-journal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Journal<\/a> and represents the fourth generation of a newspaper family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote my first editorial when I was at Needham Elementary,\u201d Ballantine said last week. \u201cI complained about the condition of the playground where the boys played marbles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paid for his 1957 Chevrolet from money earned working in the <em>Herald<\/em>\u2019s casting room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent summers in the casting room handling hot lead without an appreciation of the dangers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Jill Farschman, CEO of the Colorado Press Association, said: \u201cRichard Ballantine and his family are well-known pioneers and contributors to community journalism in Colorado. Ballantine has managed to honor his rich newspaper legacy while simultaneously diversifying service offerings to meet evolving market needs. That\u2019s not an easy thing to pull off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also inducted into the CPA Hall of Fame on Sunday were the late Ed Lehman, longtime publisher of the <em>Longmont Times-Call, <\/em>and Merle Baranczyk, publisher of <em>The Mountain Mail<\/em> in Salida.<\/p>\n<p>Ballantine is the son of the late Arthur and Morley Cowles Ballantine, who in 1952 moved to Durango from Minneapolis and purchased the <em>Herald-Democrat<\/em> and the <em>Durango News<\/em> and changed the combined papers\u2019 name to the <em>Herald-News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>They brought with them a family tradition of newspapering. Morley Ballantine\u2019s father had published the <em>Minneapolis Star-Tribune<\/em>, and her grandfather, the <em>Des Moines Register<\/em>. Arthur Ballantine Jr. had worked for the <em>Minneapolis Morning Tribune<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Cowles family also published <em>Look<\/em> and other magazines.<\/p>\n<p>The Ballantines at first continued to publish the <em>Herald<\/em> from the King Building in the 1100 block of Main Avenue. In 1953, they moved to 1022 Main Ave., now the location of Carver Brewing Co. Storytelling in its broad sense is important for a community,\u201d Ballantine said. \u201cSome of those stories are not particularly cheerful for an individual or an institution, but telling the stories of a community is important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Major announcements from Ballantine at the <em>Herald<\/em> are typically made by the chairman of the board from atop a wooden packing box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am short, and the fruit box gives me some elevation,\u201d Ballantine said.<\/p>\n<p>Ballantine also is known for keeping a bewilderingly cluttered office, with newspapers, newspaper clippings, documents and books.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish the cluttered office wasn\u2019t there. I\u2019m sure it is part of my genes, and when we\u2019re able to fiddle with our genes, it might be the first gene I choose to excise,\u201d he said. \u201cI see so many things I want to read and reread, that I hang on to them. I never appreciated that I don\u2019t get back to them. It\u2019s a fool\u2019s errand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the digital age, he said the cluttered office has merely migrated to his smartphone.<\/p>\n<p>Ballantine credits his siblings \u2013 Helen Ballantine Healy, Elizabeth Ballantine and William Ballantine \u2013 for their support of <a href=\"https:\/\/ballantinecommunicationsinc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ballantine Communication Inc.<\/a> and its publications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am supported by three siblings. I am in an enviable position,\u201d he said. \u201cAll four of us could not be more pleased that our parents selected Durango in 1952 as the place they wanted to own a newspaper and get involved in the community.
