Pictured: Hannah Ahern, 2015, daughter of Adam and Elizabeth Ahern of Durango.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Durango Herald file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission offers consumers tips on how to stay safe.<\/p>\n<p>Pool safety: Drowning remains the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1-4 and the second-leading cause among children ages 5-14.<\/p>\n<p>Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa. Keep them away from drains.<\/p>\n<p>Learn how to swim, and teach your child how to swim.<\/p>\n<p>Ensure pools and spas have drain covers that comply with federal safety standards.<\/p>\n<p>Learn how to perform CPR on children and adults.<\/p>\n<p>Grill safety: An average of 10,200 home fires per year involve grills, hibachis or barbecues.<\/p>\n<p>Visually inspect hoses for cracking, brittleness, holes and leaks before lighting.<\/p>\n<p>Clean grease trap to reduce the risk of flare-ups and grease fires.<\/p>\n<p>Use grills outside only, in a well-ventilated area.<\/p>\n<p>Never leave a grill unattended. Keep children away from the grill area.<\/p>\n<p>Clean with aluminum foil or nylon brushes to prevent wire strands getting into food.<\/p>\n<p>Riding safety: Each year, thousands of ATV, bicycle, e-scooter and skateboard riders  die or experience life-altering injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Wear a CPSC-compliant helmet. Wear elbow and knee pads when riding scooters and skateboards. Wear eye protection, boots, gloves, long pants and long-sleeved shirts.<\/p>\n<p>Ride bicycles in the direction of traffic, obey traffic signs and signals and stay alert.<\/p>\n<p>Use age-appropriate vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>General safety<\/p>\n<p>Check for hot playground equipment surfaces before allowing children to play.<\/p>\n<p>Dress properly when mowing the lawn in substantial shoes, long pants and fitted clothes. Keep children away from mowing areas.<\/p>\n<p>Spike beach umbrella poles into the sand 2 feet deep and tilt it into the wind to avoid it blowing away and injuring someone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>more family participate in summer activities, CPSC offers summer safety tips.
