{"id":93314,"date":"2019-06-22T15:03:10","date_gmt":"2019-06-22T15:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/woman-in-animal-cruelty-case-pleads-guilty-faces-probation\/"},"modified":"2019-06-22T15:03:10","modified_gmt":"2019-06-22T15:03:10","slug":"woman-in-animal-cruelty-case-pleads-guilty-faces-probation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/woman-in-animal-cruelty-case-pleads-guilty-faces-probation\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman in animal cruelty case pleads guilty, faces probation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=ac76d893-d49d-46f3-a98a-478b54929e24&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" alt=\"The Jackson property in southwest La Plata County was subject to a massive animal seizure in November 2017.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">The Jackson property in southwest La Plata County was subject to a massive animal seizure in November 2017.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Durango Herald file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>A La Plata County woman originally charged with more than 100 counts of animal cruelty pleaded guilty Thursday to only five counts of animal cruelty, and faces a sentence of two to five years\u2019 probation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a difficult case for the community,\u201d said District Attorney Christian Champagne. \u201cShe put a lot of animals at risk and in danger, and hurt those animals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In November 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/195391-la-plata-county-officials-seize-about-110-animals-for-alleged-cruelty\">authorities executed a massive animal seizure<\/a> on the property of Elizabeth and Jeffery Jackson in southwestern La Plata County after a lengthy investigation into the mistreatment of animals.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, the couple \u2013 who are being tried separately \u2013 were charged with <a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/195811-hesperus-woman-charged-with-more-than-100-counts-of-animal-cruelty\">more than 100 counts of animal cruelty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=af5073be-8ff4-47dd-b616-7d70cb44d1cd&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Animal Protection and the La Plata County Sheriff\u2019s Office seized more than 100 animals in November 2017 on the property of Elizabeth and Jeffery Jackson in southwestern La Plata County.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Animal Protection and the La Plata County Sheriff\u2019s Office seized more than 100 animals in November 2017 on the property of Elizabeth and Jeffery Jackson in southwestern La Plata County.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of La Plata County Humane Society<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>In August 2018, however, those <a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/235588-number-of-animal-cruelty-charges-reduced-for-la-plata-county-couple\">charges were reduced to just 31 counts of animal cruelty<\/a> after prosecutors with the 6th Judicial District Attorney\u2019s Office reassessed the case based on evidence collected at the scene.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/242802-court-documents-describe-abysmal-conditions-in-animal-cruelty-case\">In a September 2018 court filing<\/a>, it came to light the animals lived in cages filled with urine and feces, had injuries that went untreated and lacked access to food and water. In one instance, a horse was in such poor condition it had to be euthanized.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Jackson, who is also referred to in court records by her maiden name, Miera, was set to stand trial next week. On Thursday, however, she signed a plea agreement in which she admits guilt to five counts of animal cruelty.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=346a17f4-9461-4a5b-b8a0-1fdf4764135c&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"This dog was one of several animals seized from a property in southwestern La Plata County in November 2017.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">This dog was one of several animals seized from a property in southwestern La Plata County in November 2017.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of the Dapper Dog<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Assistant District Attorney David Ottman declined to comment about the specifics of the case.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Jackson will be sentenced Aug. 9. Ottman said she faces two to five years of probation under terms of the plea agreement. During that time, she cannot possess any animals.
