It almost symbolizes the core principle of celebrating ourselves, he said \u2013 we are who we are no matter the weather.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony joined more than 100 people who marched north through downtown Saturday in a celebration of freedom of sexuality. Durango Pride, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a safe, welcoming and empowering community for LGBTQ people in the Four Corners, hosted events around the city since Wednesday, joining communities around the world in celebrating LGBTQ Pride Month.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=98f25e59-a2f4-4aa7-8e8b-2a21b2c0965e&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Alex Hughes said they\u2019ve never had a chance to walk in the Durango Pride Parade.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Alex Hughes said they\u2019ve never had a chance to walk in the Durango Pride Parade.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Bret Hauff\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The month of June was chosen as LGBTQ Pride Month in commemoration of the end of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, an event that served as catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Clark said she\u2019s had to hide her identity in the past because of social constraints on expressing her sexuality, she said. But as she\u2019s gotten older, and with culture and laws changing, she\u2019s gotten more comfortable expressing herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of young people have to fit into a norm to be safe,\u201d Clark said.<\/p>\n<p>Suzanne Alms, who has lived in the region for 27 years, said she has many friends who are gay or lesbian, and although none of her family members identify as such, she\u2019s \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d about people\u2019s freedom of sexuality being stripped.
