{"id":93013,"date":"2019-07-14T11:03:09","date_gmt":"2019-07-14T11:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/spanish-trails-inn-suites-gets-a-remodel\/"},"modified":"2019-07-14T11:03:09","modified_gmt":"2019-07-14T11:03:09","slug":"spanish-trails-inn-suites-gets-a-remodel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/spanish-trails-inn-suites-gets-a-remodel\/","title":{"rendered":"Spanish Trails Inn &amp; Suites gets a remodel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:c0f0bfed-822e-4fd2-89a1-acd9fc12f7a6 --><\/p>\n<p>Spanish Trails Inn and Suites might not seem like the most promising site for a business investment in Durango.<\/p>\n<p>But John Hazen, who purchased the old north Main Avenue inn in August 2018 for $2 million with the intention of cleaning up the property\u2019s notorious reputation for criminal activity, specializes in turning around distressed motels.<\/p>\n<p>His firm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motelmen.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Motel Man<\/a>, principally operates in Colorado, with properties in Montrose, Ouray, Steamboat Springs, Wheat Ridge and several other inns in Durango.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=d7efad2b-3944-4334-a839-8228262b4d34&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Hazen plans on resurfacing the parking lots painting the buildings and improving the landscaping.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Hazen plans on resurfacing the parking lots painting the buildings and improving the landscaping.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cA lot of people are seeking work in Durango, and housing is so expensive, they have no place to go,\u201d Hazen said. \u201cWe want a decent, safe, clean, nice place for these people to live, and that\u2019s the direction we\u2019re going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hazen is in the midst of a remodel of <a href=\"http:\/\/spanishtrailsdurango.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spanish Trails<\/a>\u2019 51 rooms. I didn\u2019t have enough money for the first week, and he told me to give what I could now, and we would make up for it later. I told John Hazen my situation, and he offered me a roof to put over my head,\u201d Griego said.<\/p>\n<p>Griego is impressed with the friendliness of Durango and the resources the community offers to help people struggling economically. He\u2019s also received assistance at Durango Food Bank and at Manna soup kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe community here in Durango is just awesome. Our kids love it here,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Hazen, she said, not only helped her in finding shelter, but also helped her get a job in Durango.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s just a really good dude. He helped me find a job.
