{"id":92852,"date":"2019-07-19T22:15:32","date_gmt":"2019-07-19T22:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/bonita-peak-superfund-not-affected-by-epa-shakeup\/"},"modified":"2019-07-19T22:15:32","modified_gmt":"2019-07-19T22:15:32","slug":"bonita-peak-superfund-not-affected-by-epa-shakeup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/bonita-peak-superfund-not-affected-by-epa-shakeup\/","title":{"rendered":"Bonita Peak Superfund not affected by EPA shakeup"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=cf350a0a-5614-4cff-a75b-437904202ff4&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1928\" height=\"978\" alt=\"The Bonita Peak Mining District Superfund site will remain on the EPA\u2019s Emphasis List, agency officials said Friday.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">The Bonita Peak Mining District Superfund site will remain on the EPA\u2019s Emphasis List, agency officials said Friday.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Durango Herald file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler announced a shakeup of the agency\u2019s \u201cEmphasis List\u201d of Superfund sites across the country, but it appears the cleanup of mines leeching into the Animas River won\u2019t be affected.<\/p>\n<p>The EPA\u2019s Emphasis List targets cleanup sites that warrant \u201cimmediate, intense action,\u201d according to the agency.<\/p>\n<p>Wheeler created the Emphasis List in December 2017 after a recommendation from the Superfund Task Force, created in May 2017 to provide recommendations for \u201cimproving and expediting site cleanups and promoting redevelopment,\u201d according to the agency.<\/p>\n<p>Each Superfund site on the list has short-term milestones to track the progress of a cleanup project. EPA then considers removing a site from the list once the milestone is achieved.
