{"id":92832,"date":"2019-07-24T21:21:24","date_gmt":"2019-07-24T21:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/mancos-school-board-likely-to-leave-vacancy-for-voters-to-fill\/"},"modified":"2019-07-24T21:21:24","modified_gmt":"2019-07-24T21:21:24","slug":"mancos-school-board-likely-to-leave-vacancy-for-voters-to-fill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/mancos-school-board-likely-to-leave-vacancy-for-voters-to-fill\/","title":{"rendered":"Mancos school board likely to leave vacancy for voters to fill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=40717adf-09d5-4d0e-be23-0612dbe4d9bd&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1383\" alt=\"The Mancos school board will likely leave a vacant seat open until November, when voters will fill the seat.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">The Mancos school board will likely leave a vacant seat open until November, when voters will fill the seat.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">The Journal file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>MANCOS \u2013 The Mancos school board will leave a vacancy unfilled until the school board election in November.<\/p>\n<p>The board received three applications to fill the post of Ed Whritner, who resigned from last month to become the project-based learning coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>However, at the board meeting July 15, trustees said they preferred to leave the position vacant until November, when Whritner\u2019s term was up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d just like to let it ride to the election,\u201d said board member Tim Hunter. \u201cWe don\u2019t have to fill that position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All seats on the board are elected at-large and represent the entire school district.<\/p>\n<p>The three applicants were Bridgett Jabour, Katie Cahill-Volpe, and Nick Manning.<\/p>\n<p>They were all interviewed prior to the July board meeting. The directors present said all three were highly qualified, and it would be difficult to choose among the three.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know who I could single out at this point,\u201d Board President Blake Mitchell said.<\/p>\n<p>Board Secretary Pamela Coppinger noted that it takes a while for the board to get \u201cin sync,\u201d and four months might not be enough time for that to happen.<\/p>\n<p>As board president, Mitchell has 60 days in which he can possibly appoint someone to fill the spot.
