From its founding on April 16, 1889, Montezuma County has enjoyed a strong connection with the ranching community.<\/p>\n
Therefore, when this year\u2019s Ranch Rodeo takes place at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds on the evening of Aug. 2, a unique piece of the local area\u2019s essence will be showcased and honored.<\/p>\n
Hosted by Zane O\u2019Dell and part of this year\u2019s Montezuma County Fair, the Ranch Rodeo will feature numerous tasks that are meant to simulate work that is performed ranches on a daily basis.<\/p>\n
Teams of ranchers will have the opportunity to separate stock, rope, pen and load calves, steers and fully grown cattle as quickly as possible while pushing themselves and their horses to the limits during what promises to be an exciting event.<\/p>\n
\u201c(Ranch rodeos), they show what (ranchers) do on a daily basis,\u201d said Isiah Ethington, who works on ranches throughout Montezuma County. \u201cOne of the greatest parts of this country is the ranching community, and we know that (God) is watching us every time that we trot out.\u201d<\/p>\n
While the ranchers who compete in this year\u2019s Ranch Rodeo will do so in hopes of winning the prize money that will be awarded to top teams, the event will be about far more than financial gain or bragging rights.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor me and my family, we\u2019re fifth-generation right here in the county,\u201d Montezuma County resident Hardy Tozer said while competing in last year\u2019s event. \u201cRanching is what I do, and who I am. It\u2019s not a nine-to-five job. It\u2019s your life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Those interested in observing this year\u2019s Ranch Rodeo while becoming acquainted with an important part of Montezuma County\u2019s history and culture are encouraged to stop by the Montezuma County Fairgrounds on Friday.<\/p>\n
