\u201cI could spend well longer than 30 minutes telling you about the benefits of what\u2019s going on in the state of New Mexico because of what\u2019s going on in the oil and gas industry \u2013 opportunities that we haven\u2019t seen, ever,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The governor\u2019s speech at an annual meeting of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association attracted a noticeably larger crowd than an appearance 30 minutes later by U.S. Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, who warned that Green New Deal policies espoused by some Democrats pose a threat to the oil industry\u2019s livelihood.<\/p>\n
Lujan Grisham said she is counting on the oil industry itself to design new state regulations for methane emissions in cooperation with her first-year administration. New Mexico is developing the new rules to discourage waste and leaks of the potent climate-warming gas as the Trump administration attempts to roll back methane controls.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have no doubt that New Mexico is going to get methane regulating right,\u201d Lujan Grisham said. \u201cWhy? Because you\u2019re at the table, because I\u2019m using your innovation and technology.\u201d<\/p>\n
She assured the crowd that her Cabinet secretaries for oilfield and environmental regulation will collaborate with the energy sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey will not be at cross purposes, they are very clear that they work for you,\u201d Lujan Grisham said. \u201cAnd if that is not occurring, I need to know about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
About a dozen protesters gathered outside the event at a downtown Santa Fe hotel. Many described a disconnect between Lujan Grisham\u2019s pledge to pursue aggressive goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions \u2013 including goals of the 2015 Paris climate agreement \u2013 and her support for oil production.<\/p>\n
Triana Reid, a 21-year-old college art student, said she fears efforts to sustain state government income are delaying the transition to renewable energy sources from fossil fuels.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s just start with the governor declaring a climate emergency, just calling it what it is,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
