But, on the verge of another winter in the high country, the trauma for the Casey family appears to be too much to face once again.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Casey announced he is resigning his position as sheriff of Hinsdale County.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year I have had unexpected personal challenges that have changed my life,\u201d Casey wrote in his resignation letter. \u201cThe avalanche that my daughters and I survived has taken its toll in many different ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2018-19 winter season was a <a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/267548\">historic year for avalanche activity in Southwest Colorado<\/a>, with slides coming down avalanche paths that had not run in recent memory.<\/p>\n<p>Casey\u2019s home was one such location.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=11d31898-7fe6-43a4-967d-ee86e8b6dbb9&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"The Casey family\u2019s home outside Lake City was not previously thought to be at risk for avalanches, but a historic year of snowfall saw slides come down in places that hadn\u2019t run in recent memory.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">The Casey family\u2019s home outside Lake City was not previously thought to be at risk for avalanches, but a historic year of snowfall saw slides come down in places that hadn\u2019t run in recent memory.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Casey family<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Around 6 a.m. that morning, the avalanche came down a path known as Sunshine, which officials said hadn\u2019t run in the recent past. As a result, there was no indication that the area and homes were at risk of avalanche danger.<\/p>\n<p>But a storm dropped heavy snow fast and hard the night before, with upward of 17 inches reported in some areas.<\/p>\n<p>Casey and his two daughters, Sara, 17, and Kristy, 15, were inside sleeping. The avalanche wiped away the home and buried the family under a barrage of debris and snow.<\/p>\n<p>Attempts to reach Casey on Tuesday morning were not successful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/denver.cbslocal.com\/2019\/04\/09\/justin-casey-hinsdale-county-avalanche-snowslide-lake-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casey told CBS4 (Denver) News in April<\/a>, \u201cSuddenly, it seemed like the house exploded. I was completely enveloped in snow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His daughter, Kristy, said she was sleeping and then suddenly heard a \u201cbang!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI jumped out of bed and I felt the house, like it was falling,\u201d she said. \u201cI was knocked unconscious. Later, I remember waking up in the snow. I was just praying \u2026 trying to get out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandy Hines, a spokeswoman for Hinsdale County, told <em>The Durango Herald<\/em> at the time that Casey was able to get himself out of the snow. A massive storm overnight buried the mountainside in snow, which caused a natural avalanche to trigger March 12 above the home.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Casey family<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cI was outside. \u2026 The house was completely gone,\u201d Casey told CBS4.<\/p>\n<p>Sara and Kristy were found buried under about 3 feet of snow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard Dad walking over me,\u201d Kristy said. \u201cI did not hear him yelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Casey and first responders were able to rescue Sara and Kristy. The family suffered minor to serious injuries, but in the months since, they have fully recovered. A family dog did not survive the avalanche, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>Casey has worked for the Hinsdale County Sheriff\u2019s Office since 2007 and was elected sheriff in November 2018.
