{"id":91024,"date":"2019-12-25T21:46:47","date_gmt":"2019-12-25T21:46:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/cortez-serves-a-homestyle-feast-for-christmas\/"},"modified":"2019-12-25T21:46:47","modified_gmt":"2019-12-25T21:46:47","slug":"cortez-serves-a-homestyle-feast-for-christmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/cortez-serves-a-homestyle-feast-for-christmas\/","title":{"rendered":"Cortez serves a homestyle feast for Christmas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:5fd60dca-43b3-414d-ac5b-2a769a73f16f --><\/p>\n<p>Evander Lien capped off a pretty good Christmas \u2013 he scored a hoverboard from Santa and some turkey and pumpkin pie Wednesday at the Cortez Community Christmas Dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Evander\u2019s father, Cyrus Lien, said he and his grandfather, Don Lien, got all the Lien men to head over to the Montezuma County Annex on Christmas Day to enjoy the annual dinner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a regular here at the Senior Center, and he alway talks about how good the food is, so we all decided to come out,\u201d Cyrus Lien said.<\/p>\n<p>Four generations of Lien men \u2013 Don, 82; Brian, 57; Cyrus, 29; and Hoverboard wizard Evander, 7 \u2013 were among 400 to 500 people expected for the Christmas Day dinner, which has celebrated the season of giving in Cortez for the past 29 years.<\/p>\n<p>As volunteers opened the doors at 11 a.m., there was no shortage of hungry holiday celebrants prepared to chow down a good, homestyle meal.<\/p>\n<p>Sammie Begay arrived with his son, Janazee, and Andrew Guass and Chris Hormel for Christmas Day meal. They figured the feast would hold everyone until they returned to the family\u2019s ancestral home on the Navajo Nation later this week for the big family celebration.<\/p>\n<p>They intended to have a reunion with Sammie\u2019s older son, Latrell Begay, who is serving with the U.S. Army at Fort Irwin Army Base near Barstow, California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe moved to Cortez last year, about this time, the holidays, to try a new place,\u201d Sammie Begay said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=5b9e0991-cf20-45c0-a258-eed7c1a7b648&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Dearle Ricker says a lot of homemade pies came in for the 29th annual Cortez Community Dinner, held Wednesday at the Montezuma County Annex.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Dearle Ricker says a lot of homemade pies came in for the 29th annual Cortez Community Dinner, held Wednesday at the Montezuma County Annex.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Patrick Armijo\/The Journal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Sharon King, who organizes the community meal, said it is put on every year by a coalition of community groups, including the Pi\u00f1on Project, Women, Infants and Children of Montezuma County, the Good Samaritan Center food pantry, the Montezuma Food Coalition, the Sharehouse, Southwest Open School, The Bridge shelter and several regional soup kitchens.<\/p>\n<p>Fundraising for the community meal goes on all year, and King said anyone interested in donating to help pay for next year\u2019s feast can write a check to the Onward Foundation and put Community Christmas Dinner in the memo line. Checks may be dropped off at the foundation, 33 N. Chestnut St., or donations may be made online on <a href=\"https:\/\/onwardfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Onward\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Laurie Hall, director of the Sharehouse, said this is the first year her organization has participated in the Community Christmas Dinner and it is a good match with The Sharehouse\u2019s mission to educate the community about nutrition, cooking, local food and a healthful diet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe meal fits right in with what we do,\u201d Hall said. \u201cWe are a nonprofit that coordinates food distribution to serve a food-insecure population. We also provide education about food, the food system, local farms and about nutrition, cooking and how we celebrate food in the arts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo this is great \u2013 serving up a healthy, nutritious meal that is as local as much as possible,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said the roasted potatoes were provided by the Good Food Collective, which worked with farmers this year to plant thousands of pounds of spuds, some of which were donated for the community meal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a potato prep party Monday,\u201d Hall said. \u201cWe washed them, peeled them chopped and prepped them and we roasted them Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=f2681cd1-69be-4727-8e8d-17a27617711f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Samantha King, kitchen coordinator for the 29th annual Cortez Community Christmas Dinner, prepares the stuffing for an estimated 500 guests. Cooking started several days ago, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hardest thing about cooking for this many people is just keeping your cool,\u201d she said. \u201cYou have to be diligent about making things and careful about the amount you make. You want to make sure you stay on top of the amount of food that\u2019s going out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s meal included 30 turkeys, 125 pounds of roasted potatoes from locally grown spuds, 400 fresh rolls, 72 pounds of green beans, 2 pounds of cranberry sauce, salads with locally grown greens and homemade and store-bought pies donated the past two days.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Simp enjoyed the meal with his children, Loloni Simp, 9; and Alana Pinto, 4.<\/p>\n<p>The meal came in handy this year, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re on a budget, and we had things to pay for this year.
