Police met the passenger at the Durango Transit Center.<\/p>\n<p>The video, according to arresting documents, showed the bus in motion and a cellphone placed on the dash of the bus, just to the right of the driver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving video is playing on the screen, and at first it\u2019s not clear what the video playing on the screen is,\u201d the responding officer wrote. \u201cHowever, later in the video \u2026 the video on the screen in the bus appears to show a football game and sports announcers can be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-block-embed-youtube naviga-video-embed\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wSt6JDwQjDE\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>At the time of the incident, the Tennessee Titans were playing the New England Patriots in the AFC Wild Card playoff round.<\/p>\n<p>The passenger who caught the incident on camera told authorities the bus drifted over the white line of the road and nearly struck a trash can around the 1000 block of Goeglein Gulch Road. The driver swerved and missed the trash can at the last second, the passenger said.<\/p>\n<p>Jose Reyes, the passenger, said there were about 15 people on the bus at the time, including children.<\/p>\n<p>The bus number, according to police records, was \u201c970\u201d on Route 2, which travels from downtown Durango to Fort Lewis College. The driver was identified as Steven Jackson, 42, of La Plata County.<\/p>\n<p>After showing police the video, Jackson, driving the same bus, pulled up to the Durango Transit Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the bus I was able to see a cellphone still sitting in the same location as it was in the video,\u201d the officer wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Attempts to reach Jackson on Tuesday morning were not successful.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to officers, Jackson admitted to listening to a football game on his phone, but \u201cwas adamant that he was only listening and not actually watching the video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I informed him that one of his passengers filmed his actions, he stated something to the effect of, \u2018I was afraid they would do that,\u2019\u201d the officer wrote in his report.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Dodson, acting director of transportation for the city, said as of Tuesday, Jackson is still employed as a bus driver.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is clear Jackson violated city policy, which says no cellphones are to be used for personal use while operating a city vehicle, Dodson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are taking it very seriously,\u201d she said. \u201cSafety is our No. 1 priority, and we have policies in place to ensure our operations remain safe and dependable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dodson said the city is investigating the incident, and there are different levels of punishment for violating city policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are still reviewing and making sure the correct path is chosen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson is scheduled to appear in court March 4.<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_shirttail\"><a href=\"mailto:jromeo@durangoherald.com\">jromeo@durangoherald.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vehicle supposedly swerved and nearly hit trash can, passenger tells police<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":90886,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[1167,28,259],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-90885","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-exclude-homepage-video","tag-headlines","tag-transportation"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/90885","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=90885"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/90885\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/90886"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=90885"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=90885"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=90885"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=90885"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
