Working with the Good Food Collective, the Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado and In the Weeds, they are making meals for the community with leftover food from closed restaurants.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Difficult times seem to bring out the best in people, and that\u2019s proving true as Durango handles social and economic sacrifices to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goodfoodcollective.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Good Food Collective<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swcommunityfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intheweeds.agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In the Weeds<\/a>, a Durango group that helps restaurant workers cope with the stresses of their jobs, are joining forces to prepare meals from food that otherwise would have gone to waste because of the ordered ban on dine-in eating.<\/p>\n<p>The meals will be prepared by local restaurant employees who have been laid off and will be given to local food banks, food pantries and other social service nonprofits serving people in La Plata County.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is by no means a long-term solution, but at this point, it\u2019s a little bit of help, a small solution to what we\u2019re facing,\u201d said Rachel Landis with the Good Food Collective.<\/p>\n<p>The idea combines three goals:<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">To employ restaurant workers now facing unemployment.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">To find an outlet for the food now in restaurants\u2019 walk-ins and pantries.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">To help those facing food insecurity.<\/em>The concept was borrowed from the Montezuma Food Coalition in Cortez, Landis said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey told us what they were doing, and it\u2019s like brilliant, I asked if we could use it and they said yes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The first meals were prepared Friday morning at <a href=\"https:\/\/carverbrewing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carver Brewing Co.<\/a>, which provided its now-idled kitchen for the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know exactly what will be on the menu. If people bring sandwich meats, we\u2019re making sandwiches. If people bring things for a soup, we\u2019re making soup. I can almost guarantee you, we will be making a chicken soup of some kind. The workers were laid off this week from the service industry and are now working with the Good Food Collective, the Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado and In the Weeds, making meals for the community with leftover food from closed restaurants.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The key element behind the project is money, and Landis said that\u2019s where Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado came in.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation has allocated $5,000 to pay unemployed restaurant workers to prepare and deliver the meals.<\/p>\n<p>Restaurant workers will be paid $15 an hour from the Community Emergency Relief Fund to prepare and deliver the meals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe monetary source is key to pay people who have lost jobs, and Briggen Wrinkle (executive director) with the Community Foundation has agreed to provide $5,000 from the Community Emergency Relief Fund to get this going,\u201d Landis said.<\/p>\n<p>Landis said continued donations to CERF through the Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado will help make the effort more than just a one-shot deal. Donations to CERF can be made online at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradogives.org\/cerf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Foundation\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019d like keep the program going through the duration of the dine-in ban, which has been extended by Gov.
