Navajo artist Venaya Yazzie hopes to use an art exhibit at The Farm Bistro to educate viewers on Native American beliefs.<\/p>\n

Yazzie, a graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, mixes painting, drawing, poetry, photography and other media in her art, which draws heavily from Native American mythology. She sees visual art as a way to tell stories, and her latest series of works, called \u201cSecond 2 Fourth: The Worlds of Ancestral Relatives,\u201d focuses on part of the Navajo origin story. The exhibit will open with a presentation from Yazzie at 4:30 p.m. on March 9.<\/p>\n

Currently based in Farmington, Yazzie has displayed her artwork in galleries throughout the Four Corners region. Some of it has traveled through Europe as part of the 2014 group exhibition \u201cIndigenous Brilliance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although this is her first solo exhibit at The Farm, it will not be Yazzie\u2019s first time displaying her work in Cortez. She said she was a featured artist at the Desert Pearl Gallery on Main Street before it closed, and she contributed to The Farm\u2019s recent \u201cAnimal Art Works\u201d<\/a> exhibit.<\/p>\n

\u201cCortez has a very strong art community,\u201d she said. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t know it to drive through here, but I\u2019ve met a lot of people in Cortez who are interested in art who have become my friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her new series of drawings and paintings was inspired by the \u201cAnimal Art Works\u201d exhibit, she said. For that exhibit, which benefited two Four Corners humane societies, she created a drawing of a bird layered over a map of Navajo country. Yazzie said working on that piece inspired her to create a whole series of drawings about the \u201cSecond World,\u201d which, according to traditional Navajo stories, is the home of the bird people and one of three worlds through which humans traveled before reaching the \u201cFourth World\u201d where they live today. The series combines drawings of New Mexico birds, maps of the Four Corners region and passages from Navajo stories about the Second World.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a follow-up to her previous \u201cFirst World\u201d series, which focused on insects.<\/p>\n

Yazzie said her main goal in creating art is to help her fellow Native Americans get in touch with their heritage and educate non-Natives about her culture. It\u2019s one of the reasons she likes showing exhibits in the Cortez area, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a strong history in this place,\u201d she said. \u201cThere are so many sites around here, like Mesa Verde, Hovenweep \u2026 you could even talk about Bears Ears. They all connect back to our history and our stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

The drawings are also designed to help give viewers a greater appreciation for \u201cthe small things,\u201d like birds, Yazzie said. She said she thinks birds don\u2019t get as much attention from animal lovers as dogs and cats do, and she hopes to change that.<\/p>\n

During the exhibit opening, she said, she will tell some of the stories that inspired her work, and talk about the lessons they were designed to teach. Her work will remain on display in the restaurant through April 16.<\/p>\n
