{"id":75275,"date":"2017-10-19T19:55:48","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T01:55:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/school-board-submits-request-to-be-taken-off-the-clock\/"},"modified":"2017-10-20T01:55:48","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T01:55:48","slug":"school-board-submits-request-to-be-taken-off-the-clock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/school-board-submits-request-to-be-taken-off-the-clock\/","title":{"rendered":"School board submits request to be taken \u2018off the clock\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=c73056fb-086e-4738-9424-8a6db80eacfc&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"Phyllis Lockhart swears in the new District E director, Tammy Hooten.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Phyllis Lockhart swears in the new District E director, Tammy Hooten.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Emily Rice\/The Journal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Lori Haukeness, superintendent of the Montezuma Cortez Re-1 School District, has announced that the retired high school has entered full abatement, and demolition could begin in a few months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically, we are at the point where we will be monitoring it and adjust as needed, and so the timeline is roughly three to four months for the abatement,\u201d Haukeness said during Tuesday\u2019s monthly board meeting. \u201cOnce it gets fully abated, we will have a clean building, and then it will be demolished quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also brought a resolution from the city of Cortez to the board that stated that the city planned to purchase the retired school property for $354,000, for use as a park.<\/p>\n<p>School board President Jack Schuenemeyer said that the board would discuss it in a private, executive session and consider the offer at an open session at the next board meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is just really exciting to get to the point that we can talk about what the potential could be for that land,\u201d Haukeness said. \u201cThe city is wanting to repurpose that for a park, and we are lacking a park in that part of town.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">New policy on absenteeism is discussed<\/div>\n<p>The district\u2019s target attendance rate is 95 percent, but according to Montezuma-Cortez High School Principal Jason Wayman, the current average is 91.25 percent, up from 87.6 a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>The senior class had the highest absenteeism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt trickles down from there from the juniors to sophomores to the freshman almost every year,\u201d Wayman said. \u201cLast year was my lowest attendance rate in my five years as principal at 87.6 percent. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thing that has been added since 2013 is the term \u2018chronic absenteeism,\u2019\u201d said Porter. \u201cThat was not a big issue back then, but it is now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Porter cited research showing that an absentee rate of 10 percent results in the increased likelihood that a student will struggle academically.<\/p>\n<p>The board at large was concerned with the policy on a case-by-case basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI appreciate the fact that we want kids in school,\u201d Schuenemeyer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut let\u2019s also use a little bit of common sense and not punish somebody who is a good student just because they have exceeded the number of days by two or three, which in some cases might be the fault of the parents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new policy was tabled for further revision by the committee after some disagreement and discussion from the board. The board discussed a new policy in September.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">The board also \u2026<\/div>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">Replaced Pete Montano as director of School District E with Tammy Hooten. Montano announced his resignation in August.<\/em>\u201cThe board selected Tammy Hooten at a special meeting, and we are very pleased to have Tammy be a board member,\u201d Schuenemeyer said.<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">Discussed teacher vacancies in the school district.<\/em>Assistant Superintendent Dan Porter reported four resignations this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut of the four, one is staying with us \u2026 changing positions,\u201d Porter said. \u201cWe have lost two math (teachers) at the middle school and social studies.
