Robert Dean Rose, who admitted to shooting Wayman, was sentenced Friday to 46 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jonathan Romeo\/Durango Herald file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>A Colorado judge sentenced a Cortez man Friday to the near-maximum punishment after he admitted last year to murdering Mark Wayman execution-style near Ignacio.<\/p>\n<p>District Court Judge Todd Norvell sentenced Robert Dean Rose, 50, of Cortez to 46 of a possible 48 years in state prison for what the judge called a \u201cbrutal killing.\u201d While Rose could be released for good behavior before serving all 46 years, he\u2019s also been ordered to five years of parole.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=1ac8c738-bfcf-4729-be3d-1bca7ed24d58&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"Rose\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Rose<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The murder \u201cwas no accident,\u201d Norvell said. And although Rose\u2019s attorneys said their client is unsure why he killed Wayman, the judge said, \u201cThere was some dispute about debt.\u201d Wayman was found partially buried on his Ignacio property with gunshot wounds to the back of his neck and head.<\/p>\n<p>Barrie Newberger King, Rose\u2019s public defense lawyer, said issues with mental health and substance abuse led her client to do \u201csomething so horrific.\u201d The public defender argued that Rose \u201cis not a violent person\u201d and said \u201che did not want me to provide an excuse\u201d for the murder.<\/p>\n<p>In a brief statement to the judge, Rose said, \u201cNo matter what I say, it\u2019s not going to bring Mark (Wayman) back. I am truly sorry this happened.\u201d He wiped his eyes with a tissue after addressing the judge, his movement restricted by a shackle on his wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Cindy Quinn told the judge she and Wayman were talking about moving in together and getting married before his death. She has since \u201cfallen into a world of depression and sadness,\u201d Quinn said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI beg you to take the fight out of Dean and keep him in a Colorado state penitentiary for as long as the court allows,\u201d she told the judge. \u201cI feel afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorrance \u201cWoody\u201d Woodbrey said in an interview that he was friends with Wayman for 42 years. Wayman \u201cwas an excellent mountaineer\u201d who was \u201ca person that could be trusted on a rope holding my life and his,\u201d Woodbrey said after Rose was sentenced.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant District Attorney David Ottman complimented La Plata County Sheriff\u2019s Office for a \u201cthorough and complete\u201d investigation. Rose took the plea in part, Ottman told the judge, to avoid putting Wayman\u2019s family and friends through a trial process that could uncover traumatic details about the murder.<\/p>\n<p>Newberger King said Rose had a \u201csteadfast commitment to taking responsibility\u201d for the murder. \u201cHe has shown remorse,\u201d she said. Norvell, after imposing sentence, said: \u201cMr. Rose, you\u2019re going to pay for this for a really long time. Find something positive to do with your life, you at least owe that to Mr. Wayman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quinn said in an interview after the hearing: \u201cA monster is in a cage. I really want to thank law enforcement and the state of Colorado.
