Martinez\u2019s body was found in a canyon south of Cortez on June 21, 2001, five days after he went missing.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=6e5d6554-8426-41a0-8dc0-2d087356dee0&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Shaun Murphy, 18, of Farmington, is escorted into a police car in Aztec, New Mexico, on July, 6, 2001. The <a href=\"https:\/\/fourcornersfreepress.com\/fred-martinezs-killer-is-paroled-the-brutal-murder-in-2001-drew-national-attention-to-cortez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Four Corners Free Press reported his supervised release late last month.<\/a> The plea deal held a potential sentence of four to 48 years.<\/p>\n<p>Montezuma County Sheriff\u2019s deputies arrested Murphy after an anonymous caller to Crimestoppers said he bragged that he had \u201cbeat up a fag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The case got national attention and sparked a discussion about the LGBTQ community, garnering press from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/politics\/2001\/09\/01\/gay-youths-death-shakes-colo-city\/98d8eab5-4afb-41b9-b83c-35d69d7cc88e\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>at the time and inspiring a now-popular PBS documentary \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/films\/two-spirits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Two Spirits<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martinez, a Navajo student at Montezuma-Cortez High School, identified as a <a href=\"https:\/\/newsmaven.io\/indiancountrytoday\/archive\/8-things-you-should-know-about-two-spirit-people-294cNoIj-EGwJFOWEnbbZw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cTwo Spirit\u201d person<\/a>, someone who has \u201cboth a male and female spirit within them and are blessed by their Creator to see life through the eyes of both genders,\u201d according to a 2017 article in <a href=\"https:\/\/newsmaven.io\/indiancountrytoday\/pages\/about-indian-country-today-zzNHHkzlzEWFeg4RvKfKvQ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indian Country Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy now lives in Greeley, where he\u2019s been restricted from consuming alcohol and intoxicating drugs, according to Colorado Department of Corrections interim spokesman Mark Fairbairn. He declined to discuss additional specifics of Murphy\u2019s supervised release, including curfew or travel restrictions, citing safety concerns.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=035b7e35-af9b-4b38-b830-121904c08076&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1751\" height=\"2249\" alt=\"A poster for \u201cTwo Spirits,\u201d a film about the life and death of Cortez youth Fred Martinez Jr.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">A poster for \u201cTwo Spirits,\u201d a film about the life and death of Cortez youth Fred Martinez Jr.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Cathy Renna, an East Coast-based LGBTQ advocate who knew Martinez, said Murphy\u2019s release may perpetuate fear in Southwest Colorado LGBTQ communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the local community, I can imagine it\u2019s pretty traumatic to know that someone who is a brutal killer from years ago is back out on the streets,\u201d Renna said.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy\u2019s early release adds insult to injury, Renna said.<\/p>\n<p>The crime he admitted to remains \u201cone of the most horrific hate crime murders I\u2019d ever seen,\u201d she said.
