Jared Polis surprised hundreds of Park Elementary School students by welcoming them back to school Tuesday morning and personally wishing some good luck on their studies.<\/p>\n<p>Third graders Ashtyn Claps, 8, and Abigail Phelps, 8, seemed stunned after shaking hands with Polis on the field outside the school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told I was going to see the governor, I really freaked. \u2026 I was just confused about why he\u2019s coming to Park because it is a small school,\u201d Abigail said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=4787c8be-e0f8-4f92-9fe8-712a6113b41a&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Gov. Dianne Primavera drop into Hannah Hendry\u2019s kindergarten class Tuesday during the first day of school at Park Elementary.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>After Polis wandered through the chaos of students gathering for class, Principal Marie Voss-Patterson introduced the governor to a crowd of students, parents and staff members, likening his position to \u201cthe head or principal of all Colorado.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am proud on behalf of the state of Colorado to welcome you back to school,\u201d Polis said.<\/p>\n<p>Just like any good principal, Polis made funding for education a priority in his first year by supporting funding for full-day kindergarten across the state.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=13ab5595-d1e2-4248-a855-570e79117e67&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Gov. Jared Polis speaks during a Park Elementary School rally Tuesday before the start of the first day of school.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Durango School District 9-R received $1.1 million for full-day kindergarten this year, which allowed the district to increase funding for staff salaries, said Superintendent Dan Snowberger.<\/p>\n<p>Voss-Patterson said fair pay for teachers is particularly important because fewer and fewer college students are majoring in education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives the message that teaching is a profession that is worthwhile,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Polis didn\u2019t spend long explaining the recently approved funding for education, focusing instead on his anxious and fidgety audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are going to have an amazing year.
