{"id":74036,"date":"2019-08-20T11:39:21","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T17:39:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/man-dies-driving-off-red-mountain-pass\/"},"modified":"2019-08-20T17:39:21","modified_gmt":"2019-08-20T17:39:21","slug":"man-dies-driving-off-red-mountain-pass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/man-dies-driving-off-red-mountain-pass\/","title":{"rendered":"Man dies driving off Red Mountain Pass"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=1d7d00f8-3d16-420b-8921-e2224599f15a&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"831\" height=\"467\" alt=\"\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>A 22-year-old Grand Junction man died Saturday night after driving off U.S. Highway 550 on Red Mountain Pass.<\/p>\n<p>Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis said the vehicle, a 2003 Dodge pickup, was headed north on Highway 550 around 11 p.m. Saturday when the driver failed to negotiate a turn near mile post 81 and went off the right side of the road.<\/p>\n<p>Mile marker 81 is near the top of Red Mountain Pass, just before the highway starts a series of switchbacks to the north. Lewis said the vehicle went down an embankment and rolled.<\/p>\n<p>The driver, identified as Alberto Martinez, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, Lewis said. Martinez, the only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead on scene.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis said drugs and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash.
