The idea is to explore topics of current and historical interest and follow up with a community discussion.<\/p>\n<p>The one-hour talks begin at 7 p.m. Thursdays in 130 Noble Hall. They are free, open to the public and there\u2019s plenty of free parking.<\/p>\n<p>Cres Fleming, a retired chemist and railroad historian, opens the winter series with a summary of the Rio Grande Southern. Other speakers will focus on issues ranging from climate change to food security and Gustav Mahler\u2019s music to current research in aging.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 winter series includes:<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet_rr\">Jan. 19: \u201cThe Rio Grande Southern Railroad: A Short, Eventful History,\u201d by Cres Fleming, retired chemist, railroad historian, volunteer and collector. <\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet_rr\">Jan. 26: \u201cClimate Change and Projections for the Future,\u201d by Marcie Bidwell, director of Mountain Studies Institute, and Renee Rondeau, conservation biologist with Colorado Natural Heritage.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet_rr\">Feb. 2: \u201cFood Security: An Inconvenient Truth \u2013 Global to Local Perspectives,\u201d by Dick White, professor emeritus of astronomy, sustainability advocate and member of the Durango City Council.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet_rr\">Feb. 9: \u201cThe Amazing Gustav Mahler: His Life, Loves and Music,\u201d by Dan Morgenstern, musician, raconteur and harpsichord builder.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet_rr\">Feb. 16:  \u201cSocial Styles at Work and Play,\u201d by Deanne Idar, president of Top Seed Leadership Coaching. <\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet_rr\">Feb. 23:  \u201cSurfing the Tsunami: Constantly New and Ever-Changing Technology,\u201d by Martha Talman, director of Reed Library at FLC.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet_rr\">March 2: \u201cAre We a Warlike Species?\u201d by Tom Giv\u00f3n, retired professor of linguistics and cognitive science and Colorado rancher.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet_rr\">March 9: No presentation because of FLC spring break.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet_rr\">March 16: \u201cLost and Found: Stories of Theresienstadt and Terez\u00edn,\u201d by Czech-American Frank Fristensky, general manager of Tour Central Europe, and Durango Herald arts journalist Judith Reynolds.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet_rr\">March 23: \u201cClimate Change, Population and the Ethics of Making Babies,\u201d by Travis N.
