{"id":72411,"date":"2017-06-02T17:18:48","date_gmt":"2017-06-02T23:18:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/ute-mountain-roundup-rodeo-is-june-8-11\/"},"modified":"2017-06-02T23:18:48","modified_gmt":"2017-06-02T23:18:48","slug":"ute-mountain-roundup-rodeo-is-june-8-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/ute-mountain-roundup-rodeo-is-june-8-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Ute Mountain Roundup Rodeo is June 8-11"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:75a3d477-509f-4620-8299-e2acdbe06ece --><\/p>\n<p>The 69th Annual Ute Mountain Roundup Rodeo starts this week, and rodeo chairman Bentley Colbert promises another weekend of quality, entertaining shows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should be all right,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got lots of class acts for entertainment, and lots of good cowboys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The festivities kick off on Wednesday with a chuck wagon barbecue at 6 p.m. at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>Rodeo shows start at 7 p.m. Thursday at the fairgrounds with a family night.<\/p>\n<p>Military Appreciation Night will follow on Friday at the fairgrounds, and Saturday\u2019s show is the \u201cTough Enough To Wear Pink\u201d event, which helps raise awareness about breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Other events include a carnival, a kids rodeo day at the Cortez Public Library and the Rob Yates Memorial Golf Tournament.<\/p>\n<p>The layout at the fairgrounds outdoor arena has been changed for this year\u2019s show, Colbert said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole appearance is going to look really good,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A few things will be different to start of the show each night, Colbert said. Thursday\u2019s show will start by featuring the animals that are used for the rodeo, and fireworks will kick off the show each night.<\/p>\n<p>The rodeo will have more total contestants this year, Colbert said. Some of the cowboys to look out for during the weekend include Ty Wallace, one of the top-ranked bull riders in the world, Rich Skelton, a world-class team roper and Taos Muncie, a world-champion saddle bronc rider, Colbert said.<\/p>\n<p>Announcer Jody Carper and rodeo clown John Harrison will be back for the second year in a row to provide entertainment for the rodeo crowds, Colbert said. The sound and video crews work well with Carper and Harrison to put on a good show, Colbert said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always a good show with John, he\u2019s very entertaining,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got a pretty good group out there. We like our show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It will be Harrison\u2019s last year at the rodeo, Colbert said. Rodeo organizers rotate the entertainment acts every two years, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The rodeo saw record attendance numbers during last year\u2019s weekend, and Colbert said he\u2019s hoping to continue that. Friday and Saturday are usually almost full, but Thursday could use a few more people, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully this year we\u2019ll sell out another night,\u201d Colbert said.<\/p>\n<p>The Rob Yates Memorial Golf Tournament is in honor of Rob Yates, a former rodeo chairman who died in an avalanche while snowmobiling in 2013. The tournament will take place at Conquistador Golf Course at 7 a.m. on Friday, June 9. The entry fee is $35.
