{"id":72357,"date":"2017-05-27T19:42:09","date_gmt":"2017-05-28T01:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/talk-to-address-how-oral-health-is-tied-to-overall-health\/"},"modified":"2017-05-28T01:42:09","modified_gmt":"2017-05-28T01:42:09","slug":"talk-to-address-how-oral-health-is-tied-to-overall-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/talk-to-address-how-oral-health-is-tied-to-overall-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Talk to address how oral health is tied to overall health"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=64a45d42-9880-4d9a-be96-489af256aa40&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1127\" alt=\"San Juan Basin Public Health will host \u201cBaby Boomers and Beyond\u201d from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, at the Durango Community Recreation Center at 2700 Main Ave. The talk will address the link between oral health and overall health.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">San Juan Basin Public Health will host \u201cBaby Boomers and Beyond\u201d from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, at the Durango Community Recreation Center at 2700 Main Ave. The talk will address the link between oral health and overall health.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Associated Press file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>San Juan Basin Public Health will host a presentation about a growing national effort to integrate oral and behavioral health as a cohesive part of medical care.<\/p>\n<p>The event will take place from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Durango Community Recreation Center at 2700 Main Ave. A dinner will be offered at 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Deutchman, director of Colorado Area Health Education Center, says integrating medical and dental care is a holistic approach that has been lacking in the past generation or so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to put that all back together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is that a person\u2019s mind and body are connected, and if someone is experiencing oral health issues, that will cause more issues.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the effort is taking into account behavioral health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know nearly half of our health depends on our personal choices: what we eat, how much we exercise,\u201d Deutchman said. \u201cThe fact is medical people need to address their patients\u2019 oral and mental health at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deutchman said the presentation, called \u201cBaby Boomers and Beyond,\u201d is relevant for all ages, but will focus on issues experienced by adults.<\/p>\n<p>Rural areas, he said, usually suffer from a lack of dentists.<\/p>\n<p>Poor oral health has been shown to affect or be linked to other chronic medical diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and strokes.
