{"id":72334,"date":"2017-05-26T12:52:19","date_gmt":"2017-05-26T18:52:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/canyons-of-the-ancients-group-blm-partner-on-land-projects\/"},"modified":"2017-05-26T18:52:19","modified_gmt":"2017-05-26T18:52:19","slug":"canyons-of-the-ancients-group-blm-partner-on-land-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/canyons-of-the-ancients-group-blm-partner-on-land-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Canyons of the Ancients group, BLM partner on land projects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=bd08ba92-eb46-48d6-9744-a851bd003fbe&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1264\" alt=\"Connie Clementson shakes hands with Dave Melanson after signing an agreement for Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance to conduct education and conservation projects on local public lands.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Connie Clementson shakes hands with Dave Melanson after signing an agreement for Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance to conduct education and conservation projects on local public lands.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Sam Green\/The Journal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>After nearly dissolving in February, the Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance has found new life.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the friends group for Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and the Bureau of Land Management signed a memorandum of understanding needed to partner on public land projects.<\/p>\n<p>Local and state BLM officials and the alliance board and director were all smiles as they gathered around a roundtable at the Dolores Public Lands Office to sign documents and discuss plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re so pleased to revitalize and this agreement will help increase our membership because now we can offer volunteers more activities to participate in,\u201d said Alliance director Diane McBride.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got some juicy project ideas for you, and look forward to hearing your ideas as well,\u201d said Connie Clementson, field manager for the Tres Rios BLM office in Dolores. \u201cFriends groups are so important for the monument and Anasazi Heritage Center, and we need them as an extension of the BLM, to be out there in the community supporting public lands, and having that larger voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The signing is a milestone for the Alliance, which first formed in 2013, but hit an impasse on an agreement with BLM and almost disbanded.<\/p>\n<p>The group is still ironing out what projects they want to focus on, and the BLM has assigned BLM staffer David Saunders to work with them on negotiating the myriad of policies and regulations, including special recreation permits for education and research tours on the monument.<\/p>\n<p>A trail-counter program to document trail use at popular sites such as Sand Canyon and Lowry Ruin is one project being considered. Expanding site stewardship programs on the monument where volunteers help monitor sensitive cultural sites is another goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe monument has very important cultural resources, and we hope the SCCA will be a responsive partner for research, education and conservation projects,\u201d said Dave Melanson, chairman of the Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance.<\/p>\n<p>The Alliance will have an office in the Anasazi Heritage Center.
