Scott Tipton\u2019s East Second Avenue office on Tuesday, asking the representative to oppose the American Health Care Act when the House votes on the measure Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, nicknamed Trumpcare, would replace former President Obama\u2019s Affordable Care Act and, according to the Congressional Budget Office, result in the loss of health insurance for about 24 million Americans by 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Supportive honks came from motorists passing the demonstration, organized by the Healthcare Committee of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Indivisible-Durango-127909224381637\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indivisible Durango<\/a>, a grassroots organization committed to safeguarding \u201cdemocracy and quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a horrible bill for Colorado,\u201d said committee co-chairman Guinn Unger. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t just affect poor people but also college students on Medicaid and older people not on Medicare yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill is expected to make those who depend on the Affordable Care Act pay 15 to 20 percent more in the next three years to stay insured.<\/p>\n<p>Some won\u2019t be able to pay that difference, such as local resident George Foster\u2019s 34-year-old daughter, who has disabilities and earns about $12,000 annually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis country needs to offer equitable coverage,\u201d Foster said. \u201cIt\u2019s shameful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rosemary Fleming, committee co-chairwoman and a nurse practitioner for 25 years, said the Affordable Care Act has flaws, but she has witnessed firsthand how the system has helped her patients get preventative care and avoid bigger and costlier medical problems.<\/p>\n<p>Tipton\u2019s office could not be reached on Tuesday, but Tipton has previously said he favors repealing the Affordable Care Act.<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_shirttail\"><a href=\"mailto:jpace@durangoherald.com\">jpace@durangoherald.com<\/a>  <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>to vote against new plan<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":72128,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[21,13,28,2172,29,23],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-72127","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-cortez","tag-frontpage-lead","tag-headlines","tag-healthcare-policy","tag-newsletter","tag-u-s-rep-scott-tipton"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/72127","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=72127"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/72127\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/72128"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=72127"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=72127"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=72127"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=72127"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
