Nominations will be considered through May 30.<\/p>\n<p>The councils \u2013 36 of them across the West \u2013 help the BLM manage public lands.<\/p>\n<p>Each RAC is composed of 10 to 15 members with an interest or expertise in areas that include energy and mineral development, ranching, tribal resources, conservation and recreation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe BLM Resource Advisory Councils are an important forum for the community conversation that is a key component of public land management,\u201d Ruth Welch, BLM\u2019s director in Colorado, said in a news release announcing the openings.<\/p>\n<p>Nominees must be residents of a state where the council has jurisdiction and will be reviewed based on knowledge of the council\u2019s area. Individuals may nominate themselves or others.<\/p>\n<p>The Southwest council has five positions, according to the news release. They are:<\/p>\n<p>Category 1: \u201cPublic land ranchers and representatives of organizations associated with energy and mineral development, the timber industry, transportation or rights-of-way, off-highway vehicle use, and commercial recreation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Category 2: \u201cRepresentatives of nationally or regionally recognized environmental organizations, archaeological and historical organizations, dispersed recreation activities, and wild horse and burro organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Category 3: \u201cRepresentatives of state, county, or local elected office; representatives and employees of a state agency responsible for the management of natural resources; representatives of Indian tribes within or adjacent to the area for which the RAC is organized; representatives and employees of academic institutions who are involved in natural sciences; and the public-at-large.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To apply, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/get-involved\/resource-advisory-council\/apply\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/get-involved\/resource-advisory-council\/apply<\/a>.
