Mike Pence, who will visit Durango on Wednesday, speaks to a crowd in Grantville, Penn., on Oct. 5.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Associated Press file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve known for several days he was coming, but it was just confirmed about 20 minutes ago,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laplatarepublicans.org\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Plata County Republican Central Committee<\/a> Chairman Travis Oliger said Monday afternoon. \u201cWhen Ben Carson came, we only had three days notice, and one of them was a Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The campaign has handled almost all of the details of the visit, Oliger said.<\/p>\n<p>Some local Republican candidates will be on the stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been asked to make some opening remarks,\u201d said Rep. J. Paul Brown, R-Ignacio, who is in a tight race to retain his 59th District seat in a campaign against Democratic candidate Barbara McLachlan. \u201cI was supposed to be in Denver for a Capital Development Committee, but this is a big deal, so I want to be here. It\u2019s the first one I\u2019ve missed, but there\u2019s nothing too controversial on the agenda, so I think they can do it without me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019ll be talking about why he thinks voters should elect the Republican presidential and vice presidential nominee, Brown said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will be in attendance,\u201d said Kayla Story Patterson, who is running for La Plata County commissioner in District 2. \u201cI don\u2019t know what role I\u2019ll play other than setting up and decorating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Local Democrats will be taking a positive approach to making their presence known, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laplatadems.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Plata County Democrats<\/a> Chairwoman Jean Walter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe intend to start lining the streets around the fairgrounds around 11:15 (a.m.),\u201d she said. \u201cPeople can pick up yard signs at our office or make their own. I\u2019ve been seeing some good ones, \u2018Make America Think Again,\u2019 \u2018Love Trumps Hate\u2019 and one I\u2019ve seen although I don\u2019t know if anyone will carry it, \u2018Don\u2019t boo, vote.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter hopes her fellow Dems will avoid negativity, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Pence\u2019s visit to Durango comes on the heels of two stops in the state Tuesday by Trump, who will visit Colorado Springs and Grand Junction.<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_shirttail\"><a href=\"mailto:abutler@durangoherald.com\">abutler@durangoherald.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican vice-presidential nominee Indiana Gov.
