{"id":70051,"date":"2016-09-20T22:01:12","date_gmt":"2016-09-21T04:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/first-day-of-autumn-could-bring-wintry-weather\/"},"modified":"2016-09-21T04:01:12","modified_gmt":"2016-09-21T04:01:12","slug":"first-day-of-autumn-could-bring-wintry-weather","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/first-day-of-autumn-could-bring-wintry-weather\/","title":{"rendered":"First day of autumn could bring wintry weather"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:d4e6d34f-7cd0-451b-abd2-f32cc3d4c36b --><\/p>\n<p>Summer isn\u2019t officially over until Thursday, but already snowfall is in the forecast late this week for the high country.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.gov\/gjt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Weather Service<\/a> predicts lows in the mid-30s by Thursday evening and in the mid-20s by Friday night for the southwest San Juan Mountains, with a 40 percent chance of precipitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a low-pressure trough moving into the basin Thursday through Friday,\u201d said Ellen Heffernan, a meteorologist with the weather service\u2019s Grand Junction office. \u201cIt will pass over western Colorado Friday and into Saturday. Moisture is coming up from the southwest along with a cold front, but the timing is somewhat uncertain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Depending when and how the patterns align, the town of Silverton and elevations 9,000 feet and higher can expect to see as much as 6 inches, most likely on Friday night, Heffernan said.<\/p>\n<p>In Cortez, there\u2019s a chance of showers and thunderstorms through Sunday, with highs falling into the upper 50s by Friday. Overnight lows are expected to be in the mid-30s.
