{"id":69127,"date":"2017-07-16T21:24:17","date_gmt":"2017-07-17T03:24:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/net-neutrality-effort-based-on-false-claims\/"},"modified":"2017-07-17T03:24:17","modified_gmt":"2017-07-17T03:24:17","slug":"net-neutrality-effort-based-on-false-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/net-neutrality-effort-based-on-false-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"Net neutrality effort based on false claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=34b21153-c7b5-4cf5-97bd-dcd2423ec0f5&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1293\" alt=\"Net Neutrality on a Digital Tech Background\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Net Neutrality on a Digital Tech Background<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In his argument to revisit the Obama-era rule, current FCC chairman Ajit Pai <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/ijoc.org\/index.php\/ijoc\/article\/view\/6102\/1967\">cited a paper<\/a> published in an academic journal that claimed the agency had failed to consider the economic impacts on industry.<\/p>\n<p>Jefferson Pooley, assistant professor at Muhlenberg College and co-author of a <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/ijoc.org\/index.php\/ijoc\/article\/view\/7543\/2077\">new study published in the same International Journal for Communication<\/a>, says Pai\u2019s position is based on a paper riddled with factual errors and unsubstantiated claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe showed that this core claim was incorrect, that in fact, economists had been perhaps more active in coming up with the net-neutrality rules than ever before,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n<p>Pooley\u2019s team also found that the article cited by Pai was paid for by CALinnovates, a PR group that specializes in promoting policy for AT&amp;T, an internet service provider that Pooley says could benefit if open-internet rules are reversed.<\/p>\n<p>Proponents of rolling back net neutrality say regulating ISPs as a utility hampers innovation and investment.<\/p>\n<p>Pooley believes the failure to disclose industry funding amounts to \u201cinformation laundering,\u201d making it possible for the FCC director to cite an academic publication without any trace of AT&amp;T\u2019s fingerprints.<\/p>\n<p>Pooley adds that CALinnovates threatened legal action against the Journal and the University of Southern California, its host, unless material involving the firm was removed.<\/p>\n<p>The FCC is accepting public comments on its plan, called \u201cRestoring Internet Freedom,\u201d through July 17 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fcc.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.fcc.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Neutrality on a Digital Tech Backgrounddu1-i-syn In his argument to revisit the Obama-era rule, current FCC chairman Ajit Pai cited a paper published in an academic journal that claimed the agency had failed to consider the economic impacts on industry.
