McDonald had four kills and eight blocks in the team\u2019s win over Rifle last weekend.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Joel Priest\/Pine River Times<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>After opening the 2016 season with a win over the Ignacio Bobcats (0-1, 0-0 San Juan Basin League), the Montezuma-Cortez Lady Panthers (2-3, 0-0 Intermountain League) competed in the Glenwood Tournament last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The Panthers got out to a rocky start against Steamboat Springs (3-2, 0-0 4A Western Slope), falling in their first set, 25-8.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe came out flat against Steamboat,\u201d said head coach Dave Robinson. \u201cWe got absolutely spanked in the first game, 25-8. But then we came back, so the girls showed quite a bit of guts coming back from a real defeating game to come back and play really well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Panthers lost the second set, 25-21, but Robinson saw improvements and the team carried momentum into its second matchup against the Grand Valley Cardinals (2-2, 0-0 3A Western Slope)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were hitting a lot better, covering our blocks and they were doing all the basics that we ask them to do,\u201d he said of his team\u2019s play against Grand Valley. \u201cSo it was really nice to see them really take what we saw as our defficiences in the first game and improve on them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Panthers dropped the first set, 25-23, but bounced back to win game two 25-21 and force a third.<\/p>\n<p>After falling 15-12 in the third set to lose to Grand Valley, 2-1, the Lady Panthers found their groove in their third matchup against Rifle (1-4, 0-1 4A Western Slope), winning in two straight sets, 25-18 and 25-10.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle McDonald was a force at the net \u2013 finishing with eight blocks and four kills \u2013 Skylar Robinson served up nine assists and Tyra Pinnecoose and Rylee Lindsley each had eight digs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything was on at that point,\u201d said Robinson. \u201cOur serves were great, our hitting was great and it helps when everybody is on the same page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>M-CHS fell in two straight to Denver Christian (2-2, 0-0 2A District 4) in their final contest to finish the weekend 1-3, but Robinson said the tournament was a great experience for his team early in the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were getting to see quite a mixture of classifications and teams that we won\u2019t normally see,\u201d he said. \u201cI thought the tournament was very beneficial for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next, the Panthers will see familiar foes in the Durango Demons (0-2, Southwestern League) and Monument Valley Mustangs (0-1, 0-0 3A North).<\/p>\n<p>M-CHS hosted Durango on Thursday \u2013 results were unavailable at the time of printing \u2013 before traveling to Monument Valley (AZ) on Tuesday, September 13.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Panthers come out flat, but find groove in win over Rifle<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":68989,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[21,36],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-68988","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-cortez","tag-montezuma-cortez-high-school"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/68988","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=68988"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/68988\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/68989"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=68988"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=68988"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=68988"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=68988"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
