In Durango, the Animas City Theater will present two festival showings Sept. 23. The event takes place in more than 250 cinemas worldwide between Sept. 23 and Oct. 2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s exciting to be part of a worldwide event,\u201d said event organizer Joanie Fraughton. \u201cIt\u2019s a fun, global thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 10 films were selected from among 844 films submitted from 52 countries for the festival\u2019s consideration. All 10 are eligible for Academy Award nominations, which means they will be viewed by members of the Academy and considered for the award, Fraughton said.<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s Academy Award-winner for Best Animated Short \u2014 \u201cBear Story\u201d \u2014 was shown at last year\u2019s festival, Fraughton said.<\/p>\n<p>After the showings in each cinema, festival audiences will cast ballots to determine the best film and actor.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the films on this year\u2019s bill \u2014 \u201cKaputt\u201d and \u201cI Am A Pencil\u201d \u2014 are animations. Some shorts feature well known actors such as Ewen Bremner, who stars in \u201cCarousel\u201d and is known for his previous work in \u201cTrainspotting\u201d and \u201cPearl Harbor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fraughton said last year was a stellar year for the Manhattan Shorts festival, and she\u2019s excited about all the films on the program for this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great opportunity to see some really wonderful films,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Advance tickets for the Sunflower Theatre showing are $12.
