{"id":68433,"date":"2017-05-02T19:04:57","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T01:04:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/durango-woman-22-found-dead-at-home\/"},"modified":"2017-05-03T01:04:57","modified_gmt":"2017-05-03T01:04:57","slug":"durango-woman-22-found-dead-at-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/durango-woman-22-found-dead-at-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Durango woman, 22, found dead at home"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=006559c9-d5c7-45ca-8407-9bfe5f4993e2&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1167\" height=\"875\" alt=\"Gelles\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Gelles<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>A 22-year-old Durango woman was found dead Sunday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to La Plata County Sheriff\u2019s Office spokesman Dan Bender.<\/p>\n<p>Around 3 p.m., sheriff\u2019s deputies responded to a home near the 2200 block of County Road 510 after a family member called authorities to report Savannah Gelles may be suicidal, Bender said.<\/p>\n<p>Deputies found Gelles with a gunshot wound to the head, and a handgun next to her.<\/p>\n<p>They tried unsuccessfully to revive Gelles, and when emergency medical personnel arrived she was pronounced dead, Bender said.<\/p>\n<p>Bender said Gelles was alone at the time of the incident.<\/p>\n<p>La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith said Monday that Gelles\u2019 death will be ruled a suicide.<\/p>\n<p>Bender said Gelles was local to the Durango area. According to The Durango Herald archives, she attended Bayfield High School and was a member of the cheerleading squad. She also previously worked at Old Tymers Cafe, W.J. Doyle Wine and Spirits and Community Banks of Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley Blackmore, a friend who set up an online memorial fund for the Gelles family, said Gelles death was unexpected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was just a super funny, outgoing person,\u201d Blackmore said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was totally unexpected. We don\u2019t really know.
