{"id":68371,"date":"2017-05-05T16:09:52","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T22:09:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/empire-issues-1-55-million-in-refunds-to-member-owners\/"},"modified":"2017-05-05T22:09:52","modified_gmt":"2017-05-05T22:09:52","slug":"empire-issues-1-55-million-in-refunds-to-member-owners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/empire-issues-1-55-million-in-refunds-to-member-owners\/","title":{"rendered":"Empire issues $1.55 million in refunds to member-owners"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Empire Electric Association plans to refund $1.55 million in capital credits to current and former members who paid electric bills in 1994,1995 and 2016, according to an Empire news release on Tuesday, May 2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a nonprofit, cooperative we refund capital credits to our members as we can afford to do so,\u201d General Manager Josh Dellinger said in the release. \u201cWe give the money back to our members instead of paying stockholders, as is done in for-profit utilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Capital credits are remaining revenues minus paid expenses. The money and borrowed funds pays for upgrades, the release said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn other words, Empire invests excess revenues back into our system,\u201d said corporate Operations Manager Mary Thiesing. \u201cThis investment by our members allows Empire to maintain a reliable system and keep rates reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since 1939, Empire has refunded about $26.51 million capital credits, the company said.<\/p>\n<p>Empire will refund members who have moved away if it has member\u2019s new address.
