{"id":67591,"date":"2017-05-25T16:21:15","date_gmt":"2017-05-25T22:21:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/new-colorado-law-has-unaffiliated-voters-concerned-over-privacy\/"},"modified":"2017-05-25T22:21:15","modified_gmt":"2017-05-25T22:21:15","slug":"new-colorado-law-has-unaffiliated-voters-concerned-over-privacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/new-colorado-law-has-unaffiliated-voters-concerned-over-privacy\/","title":{"rendered":"New Colorado law has unaffiliated voters concerned over privacy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=ba2f6801-38c5-455a-a5ac-6f50599c4c18&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1542\" height=\"1057\" alt=\"\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Durango Herald file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>DENVER \u2013 A pair of organizations which represent independent voters that sought a veto of a bill designed to codify Propositions 107 and 108, which were approved by voters in November, say they\u2019re looking at other ways to overturn the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>The propositions allow for unaffiliated voters to cast ballots in primaries for presidential candidates and state elected offices, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>To enact the propositions, Senate Bill 305 was passed by the Legislature and signed into law last week by Gov. John Hickenlooper.<\/p>\n<p>The Coalition of Independent Voters in Colorado, CIVIC, and Independent Voting, a national association of independent voters, opposed SB 305, saying it went against the will of voters by requiring public disclosure of which primary an unaffiliated voter casts a ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Gwen Ballard, founder of CIVIC and resident of Carbondale, said the disclosure could be used by the parties to track and target individuals for political recruitment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to affiliate and this kind of forces at least a de facto affiliation,\u201d Ballard said.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the bill has been signed by the governor, Ballard said her organization is looking into what recourse is open to it to protect privacy of independent voters.<\/p>\n<p>One option is a referred petition that would take the implementation of SB 305 to a vote of the people, but that might be out of reach, Ballard said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d have to get something in excess of 90,000 signatures here in the next two months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ballard said CIVIC and Independent Voting are reaching out to privacy advocates to explore what other options are open.<\/p>\n<p>Ballard added that if a petition did make the ballot, she believed Coloradans would reverse the actions of the Legislature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very convinced if this were put to a vote of the people of Colorado, it would pass by a large margin,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_shirttail\"><a href=\"mailto:lperkins@durangoherald.com\">lperkins@durangoherald.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colorado organization exploring options to reverse legislation<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":67592,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[266,107,29,1621],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-67591","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-election","tag-laws","tag-newsletter","tag-voting"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/67591","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=67591"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/67591\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/67592"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=67591"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=67591"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=67591"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=67591"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
