{"id":67151,"date":"2017-02-03T16:53:19","date_gmt":"2017-02-03T23:53:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/resolution-to-end-stream-protection-rule-heads-to-trumps-desk\/"},"modified":"2017-02-03T23:53:19","modified_gmt":"2017-02-03T23:53:19","slug":"resolution-to-end-stream-protection-rule-heads-to-trumps-desk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/resolution-to-end-stream-protection-rule-heads-to-trumps-desk\/","title":{"rendered":"Resolution to end stream protection rule heads to Trump\u2019s desk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:02fa8397-89e6-453f-84e5-8ad70dd9548c --><\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013 The U.S. Senate voted Thursday to approve a joint resolution disapproving of the stream protection rule.<\/p>\n<p>The Interior Department\u2019s rule barred coal mining companies from dumping mining waste into streams, and was finalized in December.<\/p>\n<p>Coal companies and many Republicans were dissatisfied with the rule because the restrictions made it more expensive to open new mines.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. House passed the resolution, 228-194, on Wednesday. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Cortez, voted in favor of the resolution, which now goes to President Trump\u2019s desk for his approval.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate vote was 54-45, with four Democrats in favor and one Republican opposed. Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colorado, voted for the resolution and Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colorado, voted against it.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to Thursday\u2019s vote, the Senate had about four hours of debate on the rule and members of both parties spoke on its impacts.<\/p>\n<p>Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, said, \u201cWe\u2019ll continue to chip away at the regulatory legacy of the Obama years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_shirttail\">Shira Stein is a reporting intern for The Durango Herald in Washington, D.C., and a student at American University.
