{"id":66737,"date":"2019-08-22T20:03:44","date_gmt":"2019-08-23T02:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/teens-memorialize-friend-with-mural-at-big-picture-high-school\/"},"modified":"2019-08-23T02:03:44","modified_gmt":"2019-08-23T02:03:44","slug":"teens-memorialize-friend-with-mural-at-big-picture-high-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/teens-memorialize-friend-with-mural-at-big-picture-high-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Teens memorialize friend with mural at Big Picture High School"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:252fe89a-f0dd-4c95-8ccb-7e32af1dda52 --><\/p>\n<p>Community members are installing a mural at Big Picture High School in memory of Kaila Craig,<\/p>\n<p>The idea to create a mural stemmed from the fact that Craig was an artist, and her friends wanted to do something that represented her life, said Riley Fenn, a friend of Craig\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBig Picture (High School) is like a big family,\u201d Jessica Reeve, a teacher of Craig\u2019s, wrote in an email to <em>The Durango Herald<\/em>. \u201cWhen Kaila passed, it was a huge blow to Big Picture\u2019s student body and staff. We were all devastated, so when one of the students suggested we do a mural in her honor, we all thought it was a wonderful idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friends worked to design a mural with features that represent Craig, including an eyeball and a naturescape. A friend of Craig said people would call her \u201csunshine,\u201d so the group also included an image of the sun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I look at the mural, I see the nature Kaila loved being in,\u201d Reeve said. \u201cI see the flowers that represent Kaila\u2019s inner and outer beauty and her love for life. I also see the eye she often drew or painted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friends are installing the mural at Big Picture High School because Craig and her friends spent a lot of time there, said Luna Allison, a friend of Craig\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine Innovations, which is owned by the father of one of Craig\u2019s friends, donated supplies.<\/p>\n<p>Reeve remembered Craig as \u201ca fun-loving gal, passionate about astronomy, friends, family, travel and the outdoors.\u201d Allison said day or night, rain, snow or blistering heat, people could ask Craig to join them on an adventure, and she would.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was really brave about anything,\u201d Allison said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/282958-police-identify-victim-of-fatal-crash-in-west-durango\">Craig died early June 23<\/a> on U.S. Highway 160, near the Twin Buttes subdivision.
