Durango and the Western Slope can often feel shortchanged.<\/p>\n<p>But that changed for a few hours Saturday afternoon at Durango Public Library, where about 200 people sat, stood and listened to 11 candidates in the Democratic primary for Colorado\u2019s U.S. Senate seat. One of the 11, by June 30, will contend for a Colorado seat on the U.S. Senate \u2013 the one held by first-term incumbent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardner.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republican Sen. Cory Gardner<\/a>, who was elected in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The candidates seeking to oust Gardner in the November 2020 general election, are:<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">Daniel Baer, a former director of Colorado\u2019s Department of Higher Education.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet_rr\">Diana Bray, a climate activist from Englewood.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">Lorena Garcia, director of Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">John Hickenlooper, former Colorado governor.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">Alice Madden, a former state House Democratic leader.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">Andrew Romanoff, a former state House representative.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">Stephany Rose Spaulding, a community activist and professor based in Colorado Springs.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">John Walsh, Colorado\u2019s former U.S. attorney.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">Michelle Ferrigno Warren, who works for Christian Community Development Association.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">Angela Williams, a Democratic state senator representing Denver.<\/em><em class=\"mwc_body_bullet\">Trish Zornio, a scientist and professor who lives in Superior.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=4479c86d-9191-419d-9069-d6f060d164ba&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Eleven contenders for the Democratic primary runoff attend a forum Saturday at Durango Public Library.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Eleven contenders for the Democratic primary runoff attend a forum Saturday at Durango Public Library.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>An engaged crowd asked the seven women and four men about their fundamental federal policy priorities \u2013 climate change, health care, education, gun rights, campaign finance, economic development. The first-floor program room buzzed before and after the event as residents met the candidates and caught up with each other.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s event was the first time since <a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/290738\">former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper joined the crowded primary race<\/a> that all 11 women and men contending for the Democratic bid for the 2020 Colorado U.S. Senate race all spoke together in public. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laplatadems.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Plata County Democrats<\/a> hosted the forum with support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradodems.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado Democratic Party<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Former and current local leaders were there. Media from around the state came. Candidates joked and engaged with the crowd in the 90 seconds, 45 seconds or 30 seconds they were each given to answer questions from the crowd and moderator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradodems.org\/people\/morgan-carroll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morgan Carroll, a former member of the Colorado House of Representatives and Senate who is chairwoman of the Colorado Democratic Party<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe candidates have a lot to learn from the issues here in Southwest Colorado,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=6a270376-bea1-4c04-838a-c9704ef78fb2&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"It was standing room only Saturday when about 200 people packed into Durango Public Library to hear the 11 contenders for the Democratic primary runoff.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">It was standing room only Saturday when about 200 people packed into Durango Public Library to hear the 11 contenders for the Democratic primary runoff.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Twenty-year Durango resident Susan Corenwell said she\u2019s unfamiliar with the candidates for the Democratic bid for U.S. senator \u2013 and she not a huge fan of the one she does know. The lifelong Democrat came to the forum Saturday to find the most progressive candidate, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time for people to stand up and be progressive,\u201d Corenwell said. \u201cBeing progressive is a young idea, and we\u2019re leaving the world to the young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>La Plata Electric Association board member Guinn Unger said he hoped to eliminate some of the candidates as potential Democratic bids for senator after hearing from each of them for almost two hours, but they all stood out. The candidates did \u201cpretty darn well,\u201d given they each had 90 seconds to discuss the complex issues facing Colorado and the United States and had two microphones to share between 11 people.<\/p>\n<p>The candidates shared a common platforms on investing in education, regulating access to firearms, addressing climate change and making health care more accessible for disadvantaged socioeconomic groups \u2013 and they all recognize that. While a common theme of \u201cbeat Cory Gardner\u201d echoed through many of their remarks, each candidate differed as to their policy priorities, sense of urgency and challenge to the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>But despite their differences, each said it\u2019s important, no matter who gets the nomination, that the Colorado U.S. Senate seat go to a Democrat. The race could be pivotal in deciding the U.S. Senate majority.<\/p>\n<p>Each candidate said they would support whomever is nominated.
