{"id":66124,"date":"2020-02-24T19:45:34","date_gmt":"2020-02-24T19:45:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/local-wrestlers-enjoy-mixed-results-at-state-tournament\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T11:34:38","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T11:34:38","slug":"local-wrestlers-enjoy-mixed-results-at-state-tournament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/local-wrestlers-enjoy-mixed-results-at-state-tournament\/","title":{"rendered":"Local wrestlers enjoy mixed results at state tournament"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=cdde48a7-94b2-45d6-a7fe-2dca9ada7fdc&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"777\" height=\"682\" alt=\"\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Housed at the Pepsi Center on the floor on which the Denver Nuggets play, the Colorado High School State Wrestling Tournament ranks as one of the most well-attended and prestigious prep sporting events in Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>Seven local wrestlers attended the three-day event Feb. 20-22 and turned in their fair share of solid performances.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Moore debuts at tournament<\/div>\n<p>Mancos High School sophomore Chase Moore competed in the 2A Classification\u2019s 160-pound division and won two of his four matches.<\/p>\n<p>In the opening round, when he dominated Swink High School\u2019s Matthew Mendozain and won a 6-1 decision. Moore then faced off against Buena Vista High School\u2019s Micah Hertrich in the quarterfinals and lost 9-3.<\/p>\n<p>Still alive in the tournament\u2019s consolation bracket, Moore pinned Limon High School\u2019s Bradyn Tacha before bowing out of the tournament with a loss to Rangely High School\u2019s Tytus Coombs.<\/p>\n<p>This season, his first after he chose to play basketball last year, Moore won 33 of his 42 matches and established himself as a contender in the 2A classification.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Featherman wins half of matches<\/div>\n<p>Capping a 33-17 season, Montezuma-Cortez High School junior Austin Featherman competed in the 3A Classification\u2019s 126-pound division and won two of his four matches.<\/p>\n<p>Squaring off Fort Lupton High School\u2019s Jacob Duran, who went on to win the state title, Featherman lost by technical fall.<\/p>\n<p>The M-CHS junior rebounded with a pin over Lamar\u2019s Sergio Mendoza however and won a 12-8 decision over Sterling\u2019s Seth Marick before bowing out of the tournament with a loss to Berthound\u2019s Dalton Williams.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Martin and Abeyta gain valuable experience<\/div>\n<p>Although M-CHS junior Anthony Abeyta and Mancos junior Lot Martin look to use their experience next year.<\/p>\n<p>Abeyta, who competed in the 3A classification\u2019s 145-pound division, was pinned by Lamar High School\u2019s Isaiah Baber and lost a tough 5-3 decision to Berthound\u2019s LT Torres.<\/p>\n<p>Martin was pinned by Holyoke High School\u2019s Luis Chafino and Buena Vista\u2019s Seth Moss in the 2A classification\u2019s 170-pound division.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Sanders and Matthews cap freshman seasons<\/div>\n<p>Finishing their first seasons in the rarified air of the Pepsi Center, Dove Creek freshman Jayden Sanders and Mancos freshman Ayden Matthews turned in solid performances.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders was pinned twice, first to Lyons High School\u2019s Christian Keller and then to John Mall\u2019s Chris McKenna in the 2A classification\u2019s 132-pound division. Matthews was pinned by Holyoke\u2019s Luis Chafino and Buena Vista\u2019s Seth Moss in the 2A classification\u2019s 120-pound class.<\/p>\n<p>With the losses, Sanders finished his season with a 13-24 record overall, and Matthews finished the year with a 26-17 record overall. Based on their performances this season, both young wrestlers appear primed to return to the state tournament next season.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Escarcega shows toughness<\/div>\n<p>Dolores senior Bryan Escarcega showed the grit and determination that made him one of the area\u2019s most popular grapplers in recent seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Competing in the 2A Classification\u2019s 220-pound division, Escarcega battled through an injury before being pinned by Trinidad\u2019s Jacob Armijo.
