From rubber duck races in Rico to kids games that include climbing a greased pole and a pig chase in Dove Creek \u2013 not to mention barbecues and fireworks at dusk pretty much everywhere \u2013 the region plans to celebrate the nation\u2019s 243rd birthday in style.<\/p>\n
Farmers, rafters and firefighters aren\u2019t the only ones celebrating the deep winter snowpack, Fourth of July fireworks fans will get plenty of opportunities to see pyrotechnics this year, thanks to a fat runoff from deep winter snow and a wet spring.<\/p>\n
Fireworks are generally set to go off after dusk \u2013 or just before 9 p.m. \u2013 for most celebrations, with fireworks set to begin at 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Dove Creek.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe might just have some drowned duckies this year,\u201d said Rico Town Manager Kari Distefano, noting that the robust Dolores River runoff will invigorate the town\u2019s annual rubber duck race, which will get underway at the Piedmont Bridge north of town at 3 p.m. Thursday.<\/p>\n
The rubber duck race is a fundraiser for the Rico Fire Protection District, and tickets and T-shirts will be available at the Rico Firehouse, 119 S. Glasgow Ave., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.<\/p>\n
