{"id":65267,"date":"2020-01-10T21:34:50","date_gmt":"2020-01-10T21:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/m-chs-wrestling-team-knocks-rust-off-against-monte-vista\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T12:19:54","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T12:19:54","slug":"m-chs-wrestling-team-knocks-rust-off-against-monte-vista","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/m-chs-wrestling-team-knocks-rust-off-against-monte-vista\/","title":{"rendered":"M-CHS wrestling team \u2018knocks rust off\u2019 against Monte Vista"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=655c03d7-dd94-444e-a0c4-ec3e63249f98&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1343\" alt=\"Ian MacLaren\/For The JournalEthan Root controls his opponent during a match against Monte Vista at Montezuma-Cortez Jan. 9.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Ian MacLaren\/For The JournalEthan Root controls his opponent during a match against Monte Vista at Montezuma-Cortez Jan. 9.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Just over a week into the new year, Montezuma-Cortez High School wrestlers took to their home mats in front of a spirited crowd and squeaked by Monte Vista High School by a score of 30-27 on Jan. 9.<\/p>\n<p>Setting the tone for the Panthers was 170-pound senior Casen Allmon, who opened with a pin victory over Monte Vista\u2019s Dusty Duran in a back-and-forth match that ended with one second left in the opening period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wanted to push my (conditioning) and get better,\u201d Allmon said. \u201c(Duran) was a pretty strong kid, but we\u2019ve got strong kids at state that are a lot stronger than him and probably even me, so I\u2019ve got to keep pushing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helping to drive Allmon to victory were ruckus cheers from home fans, who filled nearly three quarters of the bleachers along one side of the M-CHS gym.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(The crowd) drove me a lot,\u201d Allmon said. \u201cWe had a pretty good turnout tonight. \u2026 You always get that adrenaline rush from the crowd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joining Allmon on the win list was 126-pound junior Austin Featherman, who capped a dominant performance by pinning Monte Vista\u2019s Nathaniel Juarez with five seconds left in the opening period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustin came out and wrestled good,\u201d M-CHS head coach Shad Belmire said. \u201cHe brought the type of intensity that we need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other M-CHS wrestlers who emerged victorious in dual matches included Anthony Abeyta, who pinned Pablo Rivera in the 152-pound match, and Ethan Root, who registered a pin victory in a the 160-pound match, which was not official due to his opponent missing weight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did a good job with shots and moving him,\u201d Root said. \u201cTo quote (former M-CHS wrestler) Swayde Noyes, (who graduated last year), he rode me pretty good, but I rode him better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also competing for M-CHS were Jayven Valdez, who lost a tough 6-5 decision to Monte Vista\u2019s DeAngelo Archuleta at 120 pounds, Devan Frost, who was pinned by Monte Vista\u2019s Ethan Hotz at 220 pounds, and Jaquin Laner, who was pinned by Monte Vista\u2019s Hunter Pacheco at 132 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>M-CHS\u2019 Caden Cote earned a forfeit victory after Monte Vista failed to produce a wrestler for the 138-pound match.
