{"id":64342,"date":"2019-05-04T17:13:15","date_gmt":"2019-05-04T23:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/cortez-residents-hit-the-streets-to-clean-up-town\/"},"modified":"2019-05-04T23:13:15","modified_gmt":"2019-05-04T23:13:15","slug":"cortez-residents-hit-the-streets-to-clean-up-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/cortez-residents-hit-the-streets-to-clean-up-town\/","title":{"rendered":"Cortez residents hit the streets to clean up town"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:54ddafaf-decb-42c1-9660-e9c3296e48a0 --><\/p>\n<p>Volunteers and city staff kicked off Cleanup Week by scouring the streets Saturday with trash bags in hand.<\/p>\n<p>The week from May 6-10 aims to encourage residents to clean out their garages, yards and \u201cbeautify the town,\u201d according to the city <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofcortez.com\/219\/Bulk-Trash-Collection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>. At Saturday\u2019s kickoff event, volunteers showed up to the Parque de Vida shelter, donned brightly colored vests and cleaning materials, and then dispersed throughout parks, neighborhoods and downtown.<\/p>\n<p>Cleaners found everything from cigarette butts to Fireball bottles to boxer shorts. Patty and Chad Hill, who recently moved back to Cortez when Chad was hired as city engineer, even found a .22 handgun at the corner of Empire Street and Mildred Road. They turned it over to the police, who said that it was \u201clegit\u201d but not loaded, according to Patty.<\/p>\n<p>Monday through Friday, residents will be able to throw out extra garbage at no additional cost. The city will pick up \u201ccleanup items\u201d that are set out along the curbside, picked up on the same day as trash day for respective homeowners.<\/p>\n<p>Household trash should still be left in residents\u2019 polycart in the usual pickup location.<\/p>\n<p>For the curbside pickup, the city asks that all loose items be placed in a container, including yard waste.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, May 11 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the city will have a \u201cdrop-off location\u201d at the Parque de Vida parking lot on North Mildred Road.
