{"id":64256,"date":"2019-05-13T20:46:47","date_gmt":"2019-05-14T02:46:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/fallen-law-enforcement-honored-in-durango\/"},"modified":"2019-05-14T02:46:47","modified_gmt":"2019-05-14T02:46:47","slug":"fallen-law-enforcement-honored-in-durango","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/fallen-law-enforcement-honored-in-durango\/","title":{"rendered":"Fallen law enforcement honored in Durango"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:bd72c907-6a14-4517-9d3b-0682ba14f2f7 --><\/p>\n<p>Law enforcement from around Southwest Colorado honored their fallen in Durango this weekend, recognizing people in the past century who gave their lives in service to their communities.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of police officers, sheriff\u2019s deputies and tribal law enforcement paraded up Main Avenue on Saturday to the amphitheater at the Durango Community Recreation Center for a ceremony recognizing more than half a dozen law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty in Southwest Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>State Patrol Cpt. Adrian Driscoll, Durango Police Chief Bob Brammer, La Plata County Sheriff Sean Smith and Southern Ute Division of Gaming Investigator Gilbert Perales accepted roses and banners in remembrance of each of the fallen. Archuleta had been in law enforcement for 33 years, many of which were spent with the Durango Police Department.<\/p>\n<p>Connor Lowande, a patrol officer at DPD who has been an officer for 2\u00bd years, said the ceremony reminded him of the impact law enforcement has had in Southwest Colorado and the legacy that will live on after he\u2019s gone. He knew going into law enforcement that he can\u2019t change an entire community, but if he could affect the life of just one person, he said that would be enough.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=857231e4-df0d-46b8-b1fe-fd2334bdefee&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Durango Police Department patrol officer Connor Lowande, second from left, said the fourth annual Law Enforcement Memorial River Walk on Saturday reminded him of the legacy of law enforcement.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Durango Police Department patrol officer Connor Lowande, second from left, said the fourth annual Law Enforcement Memorial River Walk on Saturday reminded him of the legacy of law enforcement.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Bret Hauff\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cI hope people see us as human beings and not just figures,\u201d Lowande said. \u201cPeople are afraid of cops and think we don\u2019t have emotions or empathy when it\u2019s completely the opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derick Campbell, a deputy with the Bayfield Marshals Office, said it was good to see members of the community at the memorial service.
