Joining the Durango, Animas City and Three Springs markets is a new market at the Smiley Building downtown.<\/p>\n<p>Max Kirks, the owner of High Pine Produce and the market manager at the Smiley Building, has set up a booth for the past two years to pass out community-supported agriculture boxes. This year, he said, he decided to tag on more vendors and make a small farmers market out of it. The market, on Tuesdays from 3 to 6 p.m., wraps around the southeast corner of the building at 1309 East Third Ave.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to vegetables from High Pine Produce and Nova Fields, the market also has grass-fed beef and pork from the Old Fort, fresh eggs from the Veterans Homestead Project and floral bouquets from Passion Flower. The market will run around 18 to 20 weeks this year. It started the second week of June and should last through the second week of October.<\/p>\n<p>Both High Pine and Nova Fields are participants in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortlewis.edu\/oldfort\/SustainableAgriculturePrograms\/MarketGardenIncubatorProgram.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old Fort Market Incubator Program<\/a>, which is designed to provide a point of entry for beginning farmers in the region. Kirks sees the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thesmileymarket123\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smiley Market<\/a> as providing a similar platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not only young farmers, it\u2019s also new farmers who want an entryway into the Durango market,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of a good stepping stone for people who want to set up a stand and practice one-on-one interaction with customers but don\u2019t have the overwhelming speed and hype that the Durango (Farmers) Market has.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gracie Timmerman, owner of Nova Fields, said the Smiley Market is nice because of its variety, size, availability of shade and time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s small. You don\u2019t have to walk through a bunch of tents,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s in the afternoon, so you can kind of do it after work or whatever works for you \u2013 it\u2019s convenient and straight to the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kirks said that this year\u2019s Smiley Market is sort of a trial run.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is sort of a demo year to see if we can get enough hype and see if producers are enjoying it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In future years, the market has room to expand and add music and prepared foods, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Edit Aquarian with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/VeteranHomsteadProject\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Veterans Homestead Project<\/a> said that the expanding number of farmers markets in Durango is exciting because customers are not limited to one market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at this small town \u2013 we are really putting money back into our farmers, which we need desperately,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is what really feeds the economy. Everybody here is local. You know the people year after year, you have a personal connection.
