{"id":63806,"date":"2018-11-23T10:00:29","date_gmt":"2018-11-23T17:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/health-education-center-executive-director-resigns\/"},"modified":"2018-11-23T17:00:29","modified_gmt":"2018-11-23T17:00:29","slug":"health-education-center-executive-director-resigns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/health-education-center-executive-director-resigns\/","title":{"rendered":"Health education center executive director resigns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After establishing a medical apprenticeship program and a health careers camp in the region, Kathleen McInnis, executive director of the Southwestern Colorado Area Health Education Center, is resigning.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/swcahec.org\/health-careers-camp-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">education center<\/a> is a nonprofit, established in 2010, focused on improving the quality of health care and educational programs across eight counties. McInnis has led the organization since 2012 and plans to leave at the end of December. Her replacement has not yet been selected.<\/p>\n<p>Establishing the center\u2019s summer health careers camp has had the greatest impact of the projects she has led, she said.<\/p>\n<p>More than 130 kids from across the eight counties have attended since it was started in 2014, and some of those students have since started their careers in health care, she said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=1bd55d15-e602-42d0-9641-6c8e55b7947f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" alt=\"McInnis\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">McInnis<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cWe need to grow our own health care workforce and have them be excited about providing health care in our region,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Inspiring young people from low-income families to pursue degrees in health care can also help them leave poverty, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Under McInnis\u2019 leadership, the nonprofit worked with health care employers in the area to <a href=\"https:\/\/the-journal.com\/articles\/58221\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">establish a medical assistant apprenticeship program<\/a> to help fill a need in the region\u2019s labor pool.
