The group is trying to raise awareness about how plastic straws harm the environment.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>After Animas High School students saw a viral video of marine biologists pulling a plastic straw from a sea turtle\u2019s nostril, they knew they had a project to try to make this world a little better.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/animashighschool.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AHS<\/a> Interact Club is selling metal straws to replace plastic ones that too often end up causing environmental damage, as shown in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4wH878t78bw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we saw this video, we just got super sad, and we thought we could do something to help,\u201d said Greta Cahill, 16, a junior at AHS and president of the Interact Club.<\/p>\n<p>Cahill, whose parents are Art Cahill and Katie Chicklinski-Cahill, said the club plans to set up a booth and sell the straws for $2 each on Noel Night, Dec.7, on Main Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>Isaiah Evans, 14, an AHS freshman, said the group plans to go on an international trip to clean up trash and to help get plastic out of the ocean. Selling straws will help finance the travel.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=b9e96ef5-d046-4030-a418-2fbde47e375f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Animas High School students are selling metal straws to cut down on the use of plastic straws.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Animas High School students are selling metal straws to cut down on the use of plastic straws.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Evans, whose parents are Sondra Evans and Gilbert Shawcraft, said the Interact Club focuses on community service and tries to take on projects that \u201chelp out as much as we can in anyway possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naima van Tyn, 14, an AHS freshman, said group members began talking about selling metal straws last year when they learned about the damage plastic was causing to the oceans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo many plastic straws are wasted every day.
