John Hickenlooper touted an improved view of Colorado across the nation as his biggest accomplishment in his two terms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hickenlooper<\/a>, who leaves office in 83 days, met with <em class=\"Nimrod Ital\">The Durango Herald<\/em> editorial board and reporters Thursday in Durango as part of what amounts to a farewell tour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we have transformed the way we think about the state,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve transformed the culture to be more pro-business but with high standards that protect our values.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">2020 election<\/div>\n<p>Speaking of the 2020 election, Hickenlooper spoke to the needs of the Democratic Party while shying away from discussing whether he would go forward with a presidential run.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\" data-naviga-align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=4f80543e-e0e2-43bb-bb95-6e8b2057c581&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=4f80543e-e0e2-43bb-bb95-6e8b2057c581&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=800 800w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=4f80543e-e0e2-43bb-bb95-6e8b2057c581&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1200 1200w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=4f80543e-e0e2-43bb-bb95-6e8b2057c581&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1800 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 2000px\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2667\" alt=\"Hickenlooper\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Hickenlooper<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Hickenlooper has set up <a href=\"http:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/forms\/C00687582\/1261508\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giddy Up<\/a>, a political action committee that will raise his profile nationwide and allow him to raise money to pay for his political travel.<\/p>\n<p>He said Democrats should avoid being trapped in a rhetorical argument over \u201csingle-payer\u201d or \u201cMedicare for all\u201d health insurance and instead rally around the idea that a basic level of health care is a right for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Hickenlooper said some form of private health insurance or government assistance through programs such as Medicare and Medicaid now reaches about 95 percent of the population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to ask: How do we get to 100 percent?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic Party needs to be the party that \u201cprotects the American dream,\u201d and he said 60 percent of millennials don\u2019t believe they will achieve the lifestyle of their parents.<\/p>\n<p>He added, Democrats were once the party of small-business owners, and it needs to reclaim that title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to talk about less red tape,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need to talk about smaller government.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Uniting, not dividing<\/div>\n<p>Hickenlooper said, during his two terms, prodding from the governor\u2019s office brought together environmentalists and oil and natural gas executives, \u201cthe very essence of Hatfields and McCoys,\u201d he said. In 14 months, the two bitter enemies agreed to regulations to tighten fugitive methane gas emissions in oil and gas fields that are now national and international models.<\/p>\n<p>Canada is set to adopt Colorado\u2019s regulations \u201cvirtually word for word,\u201d and Mexico is considering doing the same, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Oil and gas executives had balked at joining the meetings, Hickenlooper said, but he worked with them until the they were comfortable entering talks.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, he said, the rules they came up with reduced carbon dioxide emissions in the state equal to removing 320,000 cars a year from the roads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that a centrist or moderate position?
