{"id":61558,"date":"2018-11-01T14:18:06","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T20:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/high-school-students-involved-in-stabbing-appear-in-court\/"},"modified":"2018-11-01T20:18:06","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T20:18:06","slug":"high-school-students-involved-in-stabbing-appear-in-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/high-school-students-involved-in-stabbing-appear-in-court\/","title":{"rendered":"High school students involved in stabbing appear in court"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=20c27eab-af7c-4c5a-b088-63855affcd87&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"Cortez police officers interviewed several high school students on Friday after a stabbing east of Walmart.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Cortez police officers interviewed several high school students on Friday after a stabbing east of Walmart.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Sean Dolan\/The Journal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Two female Montezuma-Cortez High School students allegedly involved in a stabbing near Walmart last Friday appeared in court this week.<\/p>\n<p>The first suspect is charged with nine counts, including one count of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault and six violent juvenile offender sentence enhancers.<\/p>\n<p>The second is charged with menacing and false reporting for providing false identifying information to police.<\/p>\n<p>Both are on pretrial supervision and face a restraining order from the victim.<\/p>\n<p>Police have identified the victim as a male, but the victim Thursday told The Journal she is crossgender. She said she is a male who identifies as female and prefers the pronoun \u201cshe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said she is recovering from the stabbing but is in pain.<\/p>\n<p>The victim said she and the two female suspects  live on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation.<\/p>\n<p>Cortez Police Lt. Andy Brock said Thursday the investigation is continuing.<\/p>\n<p>Montezuma-Cortez School District Re-1 Superintendent Lori Haukeness said she is not able to release information relating to specific students but she said the district is working closely with the police department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously we don\u2019t like any assault in our community at all,\u201d Haukeness said. \u201cSince it happened off of school grounds, the police are conducting their investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the incident involved juveniles, court documents are restricted, but hearings are open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>During Thursday\u2019s court hearing, Magistrate Judge Sarah F. Law said the assault charges against the first suspect state the suspect acted with intent and used a knife to cause serious bodily injury.<\/p>\n<p>The first suspect is scheduled to appear in court for an appearance of counsel hearing on Nov. 7 and a setting hearing on Nov. 15.
